Job Title: Medical Billing Clerk
Department: Billing
Reports To: Billing Department Manager/Supervisor
FLSA Status: Hourly Non-Exempt

SUMMARY
Obtain charge information, code, review, and enter into the billing system. Complete billing and collection process by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Data entry of patient information, insurance information, procedures, diagnoses, charges and payments of patient accounts.

Research and enter omitted or updated billing information.

Generate claims to third party payors, either manually or electronically.

Generate patient statements after obtaining insurance company remittance.

Post patient and insurance payments and charge adjustments.

Follow up on outstanding insurance and patient balances via phone calls or written correspondence.

Make payment arrangements with patients for private pay and past due accounts.

Obtain insurance reimbursement rates and perform cost analysis prior to services being rendered.

Prepares credit memorandums to indicate overpaid accounts.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Knowledge of billing and coding procedures.

Knowledge of insurance companies, including plans, co-payments and deductibles.

Proficiency in using a computer, fax machine, 10-key calculator, and other office equipment.

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Ability to work effectively with patients, staff, and the public.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as code books and procedure manuals. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic math.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contact.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.
