Overview

The laboratory of Dr. Pietro Genovese at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is seeking an energetic, efficient, and resourceful candidate with a strong propensity to team work who will participate in laboratory research and provide critical support to the principal investigator (PI) and his team.

The Genovese lab is a translational gene therapy research group that exploit a variety of cutting-edge gene editing technologies (CRISPR/Cas, TALEN, ZFN, base editors, epigenetic transcriptional regulators) to develop new therapeutic strategies for inherited and onco-hematologic diseases. They couple advanced molecular and cell biology approaches, such as viral vectors design, chimeric antigen receptors (CAR), next generation sequencing and ex vivo manipulation of stem cells and primary lymphocytes, with suitable preclinical models of disease to test novel therapeutics based on precision medicine both in vitro and in vivo. The successful candidate will be a team player capable of handling multiple tasks and adaptable to a fast-paced research environment. He/she will assist scientists in performing scientific research, development and/or clinical tasks of varying complexity. In addition, this position will assist in the set-up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results.

The Genovese lab (genoveselab.dana-farber.org) is part of the Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Gene Therapy Program, one the most extensive and long-running pediatric gene therapy program in the world, featuring a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, researchers, clinical research coordinators, and program administrators. Because our team addresses the full spectrum of gene therapy from basic research to clinical treatment, our program is continually at the forefront of gene therapy care. Since 2010, we have treated 36 patients from 11 countries through eight gene therapy clinical trials.

Requirements

The successful candidate will work on projects aimed at developing innovative gene therapy protocols for the treatment of inherited and acquired immune-disorders, such as primary immunodeficiencies and leukemias. He/she will be required to contribute to research by leading in the management of the lab and support investigators in molecular and cellular biology, viral vector production, maintenance of cell cultures and mouse colony and assisting with experiments in rodents including human stem cells xeno-transplantations.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Set up, adjust, calibrate, clean, maintain and troubleshoot equipment.


• Clean, maintain and prepare supplies and work areas and may be responsible for ordering of supplies. Collaborates with Purchasing and may be responsible for negotiating with vendors.


• Conduct standardized biological, microbiological or biochemical tests and laboratory analyses, including the collection of information and samples from organic substances, such as blood, drugs, and animals.


• Isolate, identify and prepare specimens for examination.


• Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings, including grant preparation and presentations, and look for opportunities to co-author publications. May be expected to participate in formal and information presentations of results to staff.


• Participate in grant application process and manuscript preparation as required.


• Maintains detailed notebook of all work-related activities.


• Monitors laboratory work to ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety information as well as the standard operation procedures specific to each laboratory.


• Expected to provide intellectual and interactive commitment to position by keeping up with appropriate literature and research publications.


• May be responsible for the development, modification and improvement of standard operating procedures.


• Uses computers, computer-interfaced equipment, robotics or high-technology applications to perform work duties.


• May be responsible for designing and executing advanced experiments and setting strategy.


• May be responsible for the examination of animals and specimens to detect the presence of disease or other problems.


• May be responsible for monitoring laboratory budgets.

Qualifications

Specific skills and personal attributes required include: high energy multi-tasker, supremely organized with exquisite attention to detail, exemplary communication skills, computer and technology savvy, strong expertise with molecular biology techniques, proficiency in plasmid cloning and cellular biology; experience in mice handling and next generation sequencing would be also appreciated.Bachelor's degree required with a major in biology or chemistry preferred. Previous lab research experience is required (undergraduate experience will be considered) and knowledge of information and techniques related to either biology, chemistry, or medicine is preferred.
