Job Description


Sets up and operates a variety of grinding machines using various grinding media to remove excess material from metal castings by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Reads and interprets engineering instructions to achieve desired customer specifications of the grinding operation.

Works with engineering as necessary to achieve desired results.

Selects and sets up grinding equipment and selects correct durability of grinding media.

Lifts metal casting to grinding wheel or belt and holds castings securely against surface during manual grinding operation.

Secures castings in various fixtures or clamping chucks during automatic grinding operations.

Moves controls and turns hand wheels to position wheel and workpiece in relation to each other, and to set feed, speed, and depth of cut. Positions and tightens stops as applicable to limit travel of workpieces or grinding wheel.

Starts machine, selects correct program or profile or creates new program or profile if necessary on automatic grinding equipment, and engages power feeding device.

Observes operation and adjusts position and action of wheel and workpiece or enters new program parameters if necessary.

Verifies dimensions of ground castings for conformance to specifications, working to tolerances of plus or minus 0.01 inch.

Measures, marks, and scribes castings using a variety of measuring devices and templates

Grinds nonmetallic materials such as plastics and ceramics.

Determines when grinding media is ineffective and changes belts and wheels on grinders as necessary.

Ensures safety guards, dust collection system, and environmental control devices are in place and working properly prior to operating grinding equipment.

High school education or equivalent life experience and six months to one year related grinding experience and/or training in similar industry or work environment.


Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to effectively solve common equipment or process related problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.


In order to perform the duties of this position, employees are required to wear safety equipment such as hearing protection, safety eyewear, hand protection, and safety toed shoes. Other related and non-related duties may be assigned within the department as deemed appropriate by the department supervisor or his/her designee.
