Our client's vision is to be the integrated, customer-focused epidemiologic and global health surveillance expert for the U.S. Armed Forces. The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD) provides timely, relevant, actionable, and comprehensive health surveillance information to promote, maintain, and enhance the health of military and military-associated populations.

The GIS Analyst/Developer will support the GIS team within the Integrated Biosurveillance (IB) Branch. The incumbent will assist the development, implementation and oversight of DoD GIS products (e.g., Web-maps, Dashboards, StoryMaps) to track health events and disease outbreaks that could affect DoD assets throughout the world.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Assist with the design, development, testing, and maintenance of GIS applications (e.g., Web-maps, Dashboards, StoryMaps) through concept, design, and implementation phases
  • Implement creative solutions using collaborative problem-solving techniques
  • Automate tasks to improve efficiency in daily workflows calling on Python libraries
  • Ability to conduct spatial analyses and queries to answer complex questions relating to spatial data
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot problems within applications
  • Suggest process improvements to further enhance safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction
  • Collaborate on presentations, posters, and publications
  • Perform other duties as requested

Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position will not have supervisory or management authority

Education and/or Experience:

  • A Master Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, or related field is strongly desired
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, or related field is required
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience performing GIS-related tasks is required; preferably in a military, Dept. of Defense or a federal government setting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with ESRI software products (ArcGIS Map, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server ArcGIS Portal, and ArcGIS Online)
  • Knowledge with Python. Other object-oriented programming languages (e.g. JavaScript, HTML, CSS, C#, .NET) are a plus
  • Understand vector and raster GIS data types
  • Capability to create and modify geographic data from a variety of source such as text files
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies, work independently, and quickly turnaround maps, application prototypes or deliverables
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Work effectively with a dynamic and multidisciplinary team
  • Have an Active Secret Clearance verifiable in DISS/JPAS or have the ability to obtain one within sixty (60) business days of a hire date
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills; both oral and written
  • The ability to successfully pass a drug screen and a federal background check is mandatory
