Job Description:

Dow has an exciting opportunity for a Flare Subject Matter Expert! This role can reside in either Freeport, TX or Plaquemine, LA.

As a Flare Subject Matter Expert (SME) the candidate will be widely recognized globally within Dow and the industry as the "go to" person for their area of expertise. This role resides within the Technical Expertise and Support Hardware Discipline Technology Center. The Hardware Disciplines within Engineering and Maintenance are comprised of the following disciplines: Buildings, Civil, Electrical, Instrument, Materials, Mechanical, Process Containment Equipment and Piping. This role requires specialized depth and breadth of expertise within the job discipline and field.

Responsibilities/Duties:


  • Lead the Flare Team (Technical Solutions Team)


  • Manage planning and coordination of workload and assignments within their team.


  • Identify and mentor succession plan candidates for Flare SME role, Flare Specialist roles


  • Support, implement, create and continuously improve Dow Most Effective Technology (MET) and best practices in design, operation & maintenance of flares.


  • Own Dow's Process Safety Standard (Loss Prevention Principles) 14.2 for Flare systems


  • Provide timely technical reviews and input to complex designs and/or variances from Most Effective Technology (MET) both on projects and in support of maintenance/operations, including but not limited to specific technology, vendor selection and auxiliary system design.


  • Support flare project deliverables including but not limited to review of process data sheets, specifications, P&IDs, bids, drawings, vendor shop visits, performance testing, on-site construction and training.


  • Manage inspection program for flares including inspections during turnarounds, new installations and fabrication shops.


  • Provide training upon request.


  • Lead or participate as Subject Matter Expert in incident investigations and root cause investigations on flare related incidents.


  • Provide leadership in technical problem solving of complex issues on flares and related technologies to deliver value for Dow.


  • Identify and develop both technology and work process enhancements which deliver value.


  • Support the implementation of discipline technology strategy and provide input/feedback on the strategy within their area of expertise.


  • Seek opportunities for training / technical conferences for continuing to improve in technology understanding, including opportunities to author / present technical papers.


  • Represent Dow within industry and professional societies, including American Petroleum Institute (API) flare standard committee (API 537, 521) to leverage knowledge regarding industry standards and consensus into Dow, and represent Dow's interests in industry standards development.


Required Qualifications:


  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Petroleum Engineering or similar technical disciplines


  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a petrochemical or refining industry.


  • Prior experience in flare design, operation and maintenance.


  • Ability to Travel (20-30% of the time)


  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Will have expert level knowledge skills and abilities to be qualified to conduct Flare audits / inspections / troubleshooting as requested.


  • Will have working knowledge in various risk assessment methodologies such as hazard risk analysis (HRA), Hazard & Operability Study (HAZOP), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), sufficient to provide expert opinion on flare technology.


  • Will have working knowledge of appropriate pipe specifications, burner types and general jurisdictional regulatory requirements for flares and ancillary equipment.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in Process Technologies that employ the flare technology, e.g. ethylene


  • Process automation experience


  • Process engineering experience


  • Demonstrated experience working in a global environment across multiple cultures
