Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:



The Talkowski Laboratory in the Center for Genomic Medicine (CGM) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, experienced staff scientist to lead the CGM Genomics and Technology Core (GTC). The GTC is the primary genomics hub for the CGM, which encompasses 46 faculty engaged in all facets of human genetics and genomics research. The GTC is committed to the development and application of innovations in genomics methods for exome, genome, transcriptome, epigenome, and multiple other 'omics technologies. The GTC provides all genomics research solutions, including molecular genomics and bioinformatics support, for CGM faculty and research programs within and outside the MGH, Harvard Medical School, and Broad Institute Communities. The candidate will lead the GTC and oversee the genomics programs within the Talkowski laboratory, which will include personnel management and training, project and program management, budget management, development and maintenance of standardized protocols and processes, as well as widespread interactions with faculty across our communities and institutions. Exceptional candidates will have extensive experience in genomics technology development and library production, in addition to outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Laboratory Training and Leadership:


  • Supervise molecular genetics technicians and/or staff scientists to generate libraries and data using state-of-the-art genomics methods and technologies.

  • Coordinate with faculty, project leaders, and team members to ensure proper integration of data and workflow.

  • Train staff on new and existing techniques and protocols.

  • Closely integrate and coordinate with the Broad Institute Genomics Platform.

Laboratory Maintenance:


  • Manage personnel including training, assignments and schedules to meet milestones and deadlines.

  • Manage submissions and create projections of data generation needs, timelines, and costs.

  • Manage all equipment and consumable purchasing and maintenance.

Data Management:


  • Maintain laboratory notebook.

  • Maintain project records.

  • Perform basic analysis of genomics library metrics in tandem with the GTC Bioinformatics team.

  • Prepare and present reports to PI and lab members.

Development and Execution of Experimental Protocols:


  • Must be experienced with the handling and manipulation of biological samples (e.g., tissue, blood, cells) from a variety of specimens (e.g., human, mouse, invertebrates).

  • Perform and oversee high quality library generation for genomics workflows.

  • Determine most suitable methodology and protocols for proposed experiments.

  • Design, modify, and standardize protocols based on state-of-the art techniques and current literature.

  • Troubleshoot problems with experiments, protocols, and instruments.

Financial Management:


  • Generate cost projections and timelines for experiments and projects.

  • Oversee project billing.

  • Establish and maintain annual and quarterly GTC budgets in coordination with CGM Finance Management team.

  • Prepare written and/or verbal financial reports.

Participation in Publication:


  • Perform independent literature searches.

  • Prepare written and/or verbal status reports.

  • Organize materials and analyze data for publication or presentation.

  • Draft materials for the preparation of research presentations, manuscripts and grants.






Qualifications

EDUCATION:



  • Ph.D. in biological field required


EXPERIENCE:



  • At least 5 years of post-graduate experience required.


SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:



  • Extensive expertise (5+ years) in molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA extraction quantification).

  • Extensive expertise (5+ years) in genomics library generation (e.g., genome, exome, RNA-seq, amplicon-seq, capture-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, scRNA-seq) and sequencing methods (e.g., Sanger, Illumina, PacBio, ONT).

  • Ability to troubleshoot library construction and sequencing results (e.g., experience with basic analysis including R, Unix environment, GATK pipeline).

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities in response to changing deadlines and needs of the lab.

  • Ability to function with speed, precision, and an understanding of theory behind protocols and experiments.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to supervise and train scientific staff.

  • May supervise 2 or more Laboratory Assistants, Technicians, Technologists, and/or staff scientists.
