GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:


Brigham Health (BH) seeks a physician executive to overseethe overall operations of the entire surgical and procedural environment ofcare across Brigham Health. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of BrighamHealth (BH) Surgical and Procedural Services, the Vice President of BrighamHealth Surgical and Procedural Operations (VP) will serve as the operationsexecutive for all surgical, procedural and peri-operative/peri-proceduralassets and services across Brigham Health, including 63 operating rooms, 5cardiac catherization labs, 5 electrophysiology labs, 18 endoscopy suites, and14 interventional radiology/nephrology suites, in addition to a wide range ofclinical, business, and support services. TheVP will also be expected to assume executive operational responsibility for allfuture surgical, procedural, and peri-operative/peri-procedural assets,facilities and functions as Brigham Health evolves and grows into new locationsand related functions.

TheVP will be the catalyst to hard-wire a culture that strives for clinicalexcellence across the enterprise. S/hewill be responsible for driving and implementing performance improvementchanges, informed by measured outcomes to fulfill Brigham Health's mission andobligation to its patients. As Partners Healthcare evolves into anintegrated health care system, the VP will assume formal and informalsystem-wide responsibilities related to surgical and procedural operationsleadership, both individually and in conjunction with her/his counterparts inother Partners hospitals and entities. While the primary focus of the VP will be on the surgical and proceduraloperations at BH, s/he will be expected to embrace high-visibility systemleadership roles as the need arises.


The successful candidate will be a physician with a proventrack-record in a complex and high performing academic medical center. S/hewill be regarded as the engine and champion for clinical excellence, quality,and patient safety. The ideal candidate is an enterprising, visible,transparent and decisive leader and communicator who can foster relationshipsand collaboration across the organization who empowers and promotes partnershipand trust.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities


Strategic Planning and Leadership


Serves as Chair of the following surgical and proceduraloperations meetings:


Surgical Coordinating Committee (monthly)


Endsocopy Coordinating Committee (monthly)


Cardiovascular Procedures Coordinating Committee (monthly)


Interventional Radiology Procedures Coordinating Committee(monthly)


Supports the SVP in the coordination of the weeklyPeri-Procedural Leadership Committee (weekly), the Surgical Executive Committee(bi-monthly) and the Procedural Exective Committee (quarterly) meetings.


Partners with the SVP and other senior BH leaders inbusiness development and strategic planning for BH Surgical and ProceduralServices.


Surgical and Procedural Environment


In partnership with nursing and operational leadership ateach site, oversees and ensures the provision of harmonious, collaborative,safe and high quality care and the timely and efficient use of the surgical andprocecural assets across BH.


In collaboration with the Vice President of BH Facilitiesand Operations, oversees all physical space that is part of the BH surgical andprocedural assets.


Takes a leadership role in planning and space allocation forall current and future BH surgical and procedural assets.


Quality and Safety


In collaboration with the BH Chief Quality Officer and thephysician and nursing quality directors of each related department, directs thequality and safety initiatives across the entire BH surgical and proceduralenvironment.


Represents surgical and procedural services on thehospital-wide Quality and Safety Committee.


Reviews all capacity and incident reports relating to thesurgical and procedural environment.


Financial


In collaboration with BH Analysis, Planning, and StrategicInitaitive (APSI), develops and leads an office of Surgical and ProceduralServices Business Support and Analytics.


Responsible for the annual operating and capital budgets forall funds within Surgical and Procedural Services across BH; ensures monitoringof all cost center budgets and oversees capital spending.


Ensures the production and presentation of monthly financialand operational performance to BH leadership, as appropriate.


Conceptualizes and performs a variety of financial analyses.


Assesses expense management issues, performs comparativeanalyses and develops and implements strategies for cost containment.


Surgical and Procedural Services across Partners Healthcare


Consults with surgical and procedural leaders acrossPartners to advise on operating room and procedural policies and practices.


Co-chairs the Partners Procedural Product and Technology(PP&T) Committee (to be transitioned over time to VP's leadership).


As a part of Partners 2.0 initiatives, leads standardizationefforts aimed at cost savings, efficiency and best practices for patient care.


Creates and maintains relevant metrics and a dashboard todisplay metrics in a meaningful and accessible fashion for stakeholders.


Capacity Management


Leads the OR block review and allocation process across BHwithin the Peri-Procedural Leaderhsip committee.


Analyzes data to understand the drivers of capacity. Uses formulas and modeling to impact moreefficient patient throughput.


Partners with clinical colleagues to implement process improvementpilots where the goal is effective management of patient capacity.


Implements novel strategies to centralize all differententry modes to the inpatient and ED environments that impact throughput inoperative and procedural areas.


Influences the effective coordination of patient placementby way of collaboration across entities, sound clinical judgment and informedrisk taking.


Optimizes value for BH by encouraging use of data to drivedecisions, depersonalizing processes and allowing clinical and administrativestaff to actively engage in process improvement activities that reduce cost andimprove revenue.


Human Resources


Recruits, trains, supervises and ensures professionaldevelopment of non-professional staff members and acts as a resource forphysician and nursing staff members.


Provides direct supervision to and is responsible for theconduct, operations, and results of the professional and non-professionalstaff.


Evaluates and standardizes procedures and effectivelytroubleshoots and resolves issues as they arise; responsible for makingmanagers aware of policy and procedure changes.


Develops and implements change management programs includingefficiency and resource utilization projects.


Reviews salary and wage issues.


Implements corrective action as necessary.


Ensures that all performance evaluations are completed in atimely manner and in compliance with hospital and departmental compensationplans.


Develops, implements, oversees and approves departmentalpolicies, procedures and systems and revises as necessary to maximizeefficiency.


Communication


Serves as the physician-leader face of surgical andprocedural operations across BH when local, national or international mediarequests and public communication needs arise.


Provides expert clinical resources as needed to bothinternal and external requestors.


Research


Supports the efforts of the Department Chairs in directingthe professional service and program research activities of the hospital andphysician organization.


Education


Works with the Department Chairs and hospitalleadership in developing and maintaining a quality clinical training programwithin the hospital. Participates inadministrative discussions on issues that may impact training and educationalneeds and ensures that the potential impact on these needs are considered aspart of the decision-making process.



Qualifications

Education and Certifications




  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree withspecialty Board certification in Anesthesiology or Surgery or one of thesurgical specialties

  • Licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • DEA certification

  • Malpractice insurance meeting the requirements specified byBrigham Health/Brigham and Women's Physicians Organization

  • Evidence of continuing medical education

  • Qualifications suitable for an academic appointment at theHarvard Medical School



Knowledge and Work Experience




  • A national profile as a leader in surgical and proceduralareas.

  • Substantial record of medical management experience, ideallyin a complex, high performing academic medical center with a focus onexceptional patient care.

  • Experience working in partnership with multiple constituentsthroughout an organization. Thisincludes achieving consensus through presentations, thought leadership,partnership, and relationship building throughout the organization.

  • Working knowledge of applicable standards and requirementsof regulatory, accreditation and licensing agencies.

  • A strong reputation as a respected clinician.

  • Past experience with EPIC is especially welcome.
