The Registered Technologist in this class is distinguished by a high degree of sophistication and has experience in all modalities of Electroneurodiagnostic Technology. This person is responsible for the technical operation of the laboratory performing clinical and/or research work; billing; directs related clerical activity; plans and helps develop training activities and supervises all testing procedures. This person is responsible to help prepare the yearly budget, maintenance of lab supply inventory, volume analyses and identifying Quality Improvement Projects. This person assists the medical director in the evaluation of new equipment. As lab manager completes annual performance evaluations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plans/reviews laboratory schedules, assigns priorities according to the workload and clinical urgency in conjunction with the medical team.
Supervises, plans and reviews the work of the technical staff and performs their duties when required.
When necessary, takes corrective action or suggests technical innovations.
Assist with technical equipment problems, advanced troubleshooting and preliminary technical reports. Assist technologists with uncertain pattern recognition.
Adheres to training regarding ethical responsibilities and confidentiality.
Explains the procedure to the patient to secure the cooperation necessary for a complete examination. Checks the patient's chart for orders and special needs. Takes a complete history from the patient or medical record.
Performs standard and advanced EEG and Epilepsy long Term Monitoring (LTM) recordingsindependently in a highly skilled, patient-appropriate manner, recognizes normal and abnormal results and recognizes and takes reasonable steps to eliminate artifact.
Performs standard and advanced EEG and LTM monitoring in the laboratory, at the bedside in theintensive care unit or other hospital units, in the OR and in the Angio and MRT suites understanding the special technical requirements of these areas.
Performs or assists with EEG and LTM recordings on uncooperative or developmentally delayed patients,taking appropriate measures for the safety to the patient and technologist.
Supervises or performs particularly difficult and unusual recording procedures if needed.
Clinical Instructor for Laboure College. Teach patient safety, electrode sterilization, 10/20- measurement technique, history taking, EEG pattern recognition, instrumentation and basic troubleshooting techniques. Write student evaluations.
Maintains all instrumentation in excellent working order, checking calibrations, making minoradjustment and repairs deemed by the instrument manufacturer as appropriate and safe.
Demonstrates positive patient-appropriate interpersonal skills with patients, physician staff, and other hospital/clinic staff members. Page 2
Responsible for maintaining various service contracts for all the neurodiagnostic equipment/software and maintain working relationships with many external vendors.
Act as a liaison between physicians, hospital staff, patients, referral sources and NeurophysiologyLaboratories.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the central nervous system, epilepsy and diseases related to neurodiagnostic medicine, instrumentation, basic electronics and electrical safety.
Bills all EEG procedures checking for accuracy of diagnostic codes, procedure and staff physicianinterpretation checking timelines and completeness. Oversee LTM billing for timelines and completeness. Resolve problems with BPG, insurance companies and patients when possible and/or appropriate.
Supervises and participates in teaching all technical personnel.
Supervise, coordinate and assist with hiring, productivity monitoring, annual evaluation and disciplinary action for Department Technologists.
Evaluate new equipment and assist with developing training programs associated with new equipment implementation, troubleshooting and coordination of repair of neurodiagnostic equipment.
Monitor and maintain lab supply inventory, supervise the ordering process and approve expenditures within the constraints of the annual budget.
Develop and implement Quality Assurance monitoring programs in adherence to the Joint Commission guidelines andfor adherence to OSHA guidelines for safety in the workplace.
Develop and maintain the Department policy and procedure Manuals
Continues education by participation in conferences, technical meetings, site visits.
Performs other related duties as required.
Graduation from an EEG training program or Associates Degree program.
Registration in EEG through ABRET (R. EEG T.) (Or equivalent)
At least 5 years total experience in all aspects of Neurodiagnostics and the ability to independently perform all types of neurodiagnostic testing in the EEG/Epilepsy Laboratory.
Demonstrated interpersonal/leadership skills and ability to function in a busy laboratory environment.

Maturity and ability to establish good rapport with patients, public and staff.
Capacity to deal with severely ill patients.
Physically able to assist with movement of patients and testing equipment.
The majority of tests performed within the lab require minimal physical requirements. Occasionally, the technologist is required to assist moving patients from a wheel chair to the laboratory bed. When working on patient floors/ICU suites, the technologist needs to understand precaution techniques especially around patients with known infectious diseases and patients on reverse precautions. Collodion is used during long term electrode hookups at 40-60 min intervals and Acetone may be used to remove electrodes at I 0-15 min intervals. The technologist may work with combative patients and must be aware of the possibility of injury. When in the OR the technologists must be knowledgeable of the boundaries for sterile fields and consequences of contamination.
