Position Summary:


Vallen's Director of Category Management is a staff management position in Marketing, responsible for development and execution of assigned category strategy. Create opportunities to engage core suppliers in category strategy that drives mutual sales growth and increased profitability. Drive engagement between core suppliers and Vallen sales leadership, and hold both parties accountable to meet mutual objectives. Responsible for overall profitability and budget of assigned category.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Strategy development and execution of assigned category

  • Program and Solution development

  • Collaborate with sales team to achieve growth goals by sales business unit.

  • Work with operations team to identify areas for productivity gains, and supplier scorecard creation.

  • Identify, establish, and manage relationships with top industrial suppliers and/or stakeholders to formulate and execute long-term growth, and investment strategy.

  • Assess current team and determine path to a Winning Team.

  • Establish and execute criteria in support of Vallen's business goals and objectives and evaluate vendor performance and compliance when considering contract renewals.

  • Provide input into and/or formulate short term and long-term strategic marketing and communications plans.

  • Negotiate and maximize the most lucrative rebate, incentive, and co-op terms and conditions for Vallen.

  • P & L responsibility for assigned category.

  • Analyze sales information, projections, and other meaningful data to establish detailed baselines and spend analytics for ownership categories from which cost-effective decisions are made.

  • Prepare forecasts on market evolution and company product and service offerings. May be responsible for or assist with the planning, directing, and implementing marketing activities for major product lines.

  • Provide resolution to supplier issue management and escalation processes.

  • Perform staff management duties for a team of 20 - 30 associates. Staff management responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing, selecting, hiring, coaching, counseling, and disciplining associates while enforcing company policies, procedures, and productivity standards.

  • Other duties as assigned.






Required Skills


Job Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in a related field of study and at least 10 years applicable of experience. Applicable experience should include:



  • Extensive understanding of sourcing and procurement operations, procedures, and best practices with demonstration of strong supplier negotiation and business planning skills to maximize supplier sales.

  • Experience with developing supplier-focused programs (e.g., incentives, co-ops, rebates, etc.)

  • Industrial distribution industry experience preferred.

  • Strong presentation skills with professional presence to deliver materials to executive audience (internally and/or externally).

  • Demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and change management skills.
