Job Description:

Requisition Id5511

Overview:

The Research Accelerator Division (RAD) within NScD invites applications for a cryogenic engineer in its Cryogenics Group. The SNS SCL is the first accelerator that uses superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) technology for a pulsed proton machine and is now considered to be the world's leading high-power SCL proton accelerator facility.

The Cryogenics Group is responsible for safe, reliable and cost effective operation, maintenance, and improvement of the Central Helium Liquefier (CHL) as well as the engineering and maintenance of the Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS). The CHL is a 2K helium plant that supplies the liquid helium to the cryomodules that comprise the superconducting section of the accelerator. The CMS contains a 20K helium refrigerator that cools the hydrogen that circulates through the SNS moderators. Additionally, the Cryogenics Group supports testing in the superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) area by operating and maintaining the Cryogenic Test Facility.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports the operation of the cryogenic facilities in support of the baseline reliability and safety objectives of the SNS.

  • Serve as the CMS System Engineer. CMS is a Credited Engineering Control (CEC).

  • Coordinates and integrates the effort to maintain and improve the SNS Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS) and related control systems to meet the SNS operational metric goal.

  • Leads or participates in design, development, construction, and operation of SNS cryogenic systems, test equipment and test facilities.

  • Performs cryogenic measurements and evaluates data to correct, improve, and/or optimize performance of cryogenic systems.

  • Develops and ensures availability of procedures, drawings, and other documentation required.

  • Documents and implements the developed systems' plans within budget and schedule.

  • Supports cryogenic engineering for other current or future cryogenic systems at the SNS facility or for other ORNL and DOE initiatives.

  • Maintains and improves operability of accelerator by monitoring and evaluating performance of the cryogenic systems, including failures and developing and implementing maintenance, improvement, and upgrade strategies and procedures.

  • Participates in maintaining 24/7 operation of the cryogenic systems, requiring flexibility in working hours to overcome unforeseen breakdowns.

  • Represents and presents group activities to the Division, Directorate, and independent and DOE review groups, and professional organizations.

  • Participates in scientific conferences, workshops, and meetings and publish results in the form of SNS technical notes and memos, workshop and conference proceedings, and scientific journals.

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environment, safety, health, and quality requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.

  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here:https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity

Basic Qualifications

  • and cryogenic systems

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Knowledge of related safety issues, regulations, and safe practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in engineering, or a related technical field

  • Familiarity with accelerator systems and/or complex systems facility operations desired.

  • Working level proficiency in Creo CAD software

About Neutron Sciences Directorate:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go tohttp://neutrons.ornl.gov.
