Job Description

The Fire Captain directs the activities of all Fire personnel during an assigned shift. Responds to emergencies and performs fire suppression/EMS activities, rescue, damage control and property preservation. Maintains a state of readiness of facilities and equipment by scheduled inspections, testing and maintenance. Promotes the health and safety of the department.Although firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible areas of activity, the major portion of time is spent drilling and studying methods, techniques, and organization, and in routine duties in the care and maintenance ofcustomerproperty and equipment.

This is considered a safety sensitive positionandis subject to the both,the Company's and the Client's Industrial Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS ANDDUTIES:

Administration Task:

    Prepares timely and accurate reports and maintains company files in an up-to-date status, as required. Reports include but not limited to, Daily Unit logs (214), Activity Reports, PCRs, Accident reports, Reimbursement reports, and electronic mail.
  • Monitors the work and trainingschedule, andcommunicates with team members in preparation for the assignment.

  • Stays abreast of all company communication including but not limited to emails, newsletters, memos, meetings, videos.


  • Maintains confidentiality with employee,customerand contractual information.

  • Maintains the company reputation through positive direct contact with customers, agencies, vendors,subcontractorsand the public. Regularly and clearly communicates with management additional contractual opportunities with current and prospective customers.

  • Abides by and reinforces the Company's objectives, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, mission, guiding principles, and advocates for them.

  • Understands the scope of work, regulatoryrequirementsand other special contractual obligations for each customer they are assigned.

  • Attends meetings, participates in conference calls and reads and understands all company communications including policies procedures, Career Development Guide.

Supervision and Team Development:


  • Supervises a team in the performance of the technical aspects of their work and takes charge of complex and difficult tasks, as appropriate. Determines work procedures based on contractual scope of work, assigns work to personnel, and monitors the work performance of their team.

  • Develops responsibility and teamwork among the members of their team in the accomplishment of work tasks by assuring each employee understands their work responsibilities, delegating responsibility and authority to personnel who can effectively fulfill them, and encouraging communication with and among employees.

  • Keeps subordinates and superiors adequately informed of significant matters which affect their work, attitudes, and morale. Advises and consults with their immediate supervisor on a regular and ongoing basis.

  • Assures the performance of their team in accordance with the objectives and priorities established by the Company/Client's Rules and Regulations, Mission, Vision, and guiding principles.


  • Monitors the quality and quantity of the work performed by subordinate personnel by frequently reviewing the work methods utilized and the timeliness of those work methods; identifies and documents problems in quantity and quality of work and takes prompt and effective corrective action.

  • Objectively and constructively evaluates the performance of subordinate personnel, promptly letting the employee know how well they're doing, and recommending remedial training and discipline when necessary.

  • Motivates their team by providing recognition and a sense of achievement when a job is welldone, andhelping assigned personnel learn new skills so they feel a sense of personal growth and advancement.

  • The most critical work product in our company requires high levels of cooperation and support between team members in collateral working relationships. It is incumbent on the captain to create positive working relationships that promote teamwork and high levels of trust among team members.

  • The captain will clearly assign tasks in such a way that each team member understands not only their own task assignment, but the task assignments of those people they work around. Where work product is handed off from one team member to another, or one team to another, the team members will discuss the quality standards that each team member needs from other team members.

  • The captain will create circumstances where team members provide feedback to each other, in a respectful way related to quality standards, pace of work and safety practices.

  • The Captain will require positive feedback practice during times of low stress activities using project debriefs, brainstorming best practices, team teaching and cross training, so that during periods of high stress, the team can operate at high levels of cooperation, support and trust.

  • The Captain is accountable for evaluating the morale of the team, identifying team behavior that promotes teamwork and identifying team behavior that is destructive to teamwork.

  • The captain will review the team members each month in a 1-1 discussion with the captain's manager, to identify steps the captain may take to promote teamwork and discourage behavior that is destructive to teamwork.

  • Assigns and supervises the work of maintaining fire apparatus, the fire station, and related grounds, facilities, equipment, and supplies during a work shift to ensure that all apparatus, equipment, facilities, and supplies are in a readily available, safe, and useful condition.

  • Identifies ways to streamline operational methods and tactics and proposes changes to management staff.

  • Maintains control over equipment, supplies, and materials utilized by their team. Has an adequate knowledge of their immediate response area and project specific activities.

  • Develops a daily work assignment for their team, establishing the priorities of the work, and reviewing and adjusting the assignments to fit climatic conditions and workload. Makes daily assignments to their team in accordance with the schedule.

  • Maintains a state of uninterrupted vigilance of the team during routine standby operations toeffectively and promptly respond to action.

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and controls project safety inspections. Conducts inspections on a timely and frequent basis to eliminate workplace hazards, enforce fire/rescue plans, and provide safety education to the team, customer and public.

  • Participates, and assists in conducting and documents daily job hazard analysis, tailboard safety meetings and fire/rescue plans with team and project workforce.

  • Reports to supervisor and documents the condition of assigned apparatus, facilities, equipment, and supplies on the appropriate forms and promptly communicates with supervisor needs to maintain a state of readiness.

  • Maintains positive customer relationships, promotes allGMRservices, maintains services within the scope of work and maintains a positive reputation of the company.

  • Leads and participates in the response of a team to reported emergencies, such as fires, rescues, accidents, medical assistance, and other hazardous conditions, as well as other assigned calls.

  • Assesses the situation and acts on the conditions found utilizing industry best practices within the scope of training and contractual obligations.

  • Assures calls for service are responded in a safe and timely manner, including the prompt and correct size- up, assessment, and type of the response, and that the scene is set up properly to provide proper traffic flow, and prevents the occurrence of injuries to assigned personnel.

  • Promptly communicates emergency situations to the duty chief when safe to doso, anddocuments all actions once the situation is mitigated.

  • Using best efforts and within scope of work promptly respond to all emergencies safely using established protocols,policiesand training to effectively mitigated.

  • Clearly,promptlyand accurately documents all actions related to each incident, accident or emergencyto thesiteBattalion Chief.

  • Conducts orientation, training, and practice drills in all phases of firefighting and related emergency rescue/medical services response to develop and maintain the capabilities and readiness of subordinate personnel.

  • Conducts timely and frequent training related to apparatus, equipment, supplies, safety inspections, physical fitness, accident prevention, monitors, and response times of their team members.

  • Maintains knowledge,skillsand proficiency by attending Training drills and completing Target Solutions assignments, within due dates, as directed by the company.

  • Maintains an adequate level of physical fitness to meet job requirements.

  • Maintains current certifications in Fire, Rescue, and EMS.

  • Keeps abreast of new tactics, procedures, programs, and technologies in the fire suppression and prevention.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • The work is generally shift work consisting of 12 hours on duty and 12 hours off duty, or 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty, depending on the assignment.

Travel:

  • Travel is usually limited to one time per year for live fire burns,2-5 dayduration.

Work Environment:

  • The employee will be exposed to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud, from open areas to very cramped confined spaces.

  • The employee may be required to work at heights above ground and/or confined spaces within the plant premises.

  • The work environment will subject the employee to heavy traffic conditions both in responding to emergency calls and when attempting extrications at emergency scenes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • 21 years old AND

  • One (1) year industrial fire brigadeexperience

  • Must possess a Transportation Security Administration's "Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card

  • Minimum Training Requirements:

  • State Firefighter 1 or higher

  • Hazardous Materials - Operations


  • NFPA 1041, Fire Officer I

  • State or National Registry, EMR, EMT-B, EMT-A or Paramedic (dependent upon assignment)

  • CPR/AED

  • Desirable Qualifications:
  • NFPA 1081, Exterior Fire Brigade Member

TESTING REQUIREMENTS:

Physical ability test, medical examination, oral interview, drug screening and background verification/checks
