Job Description Summary:

The Histologist will perform embedding, microtomy, H&E and Special Stains, and immunohistochemistry. This position will be instrumental in the group’s efforts to provide evidence of target engagement across the PTC Therapeutics pipeline with a particular interest in neurodegenerative programs. The incumbent will be responsible for communicating experimental results to his/her supervisor and working cross-functionally across multiple departments.

This position will adhere to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate. 

Job Description:

Primary duties/responsibilities:

• Under general guidance, executes experiments and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s).




• Carries out grossing, orienting, and cryo-embedding research tissues




• Maintain diagnostic viability of all specimens received and ensure correct labeling of all materials




• Responsible for cryo-sectioning and thaw-mounting fresh frozen tissues




• Perform rapid H&E or Cresyl Violet staining to quickly assess tissue coordinates and architecture




• Prepare and maintain tissue fixatives and reagents/solutions for staining of tissue sections




• Conduct IHC, ICC, and IF to determine the localization of biomarkers and/or pharmacological targets




• Keep records of laboratory protocols and maintenance of equipment in an ELN




• Demonstrates compliance with corporate, departmental, and job-specific requirements

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Hands on experience with cryo-sectioning and staining tissues




• Skilled at cryo-sectioning and thaw mounting fresh frozen tissues




• Experience with tissue and/or cell staining protocols

* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with atleast 3 years of relevant experience.

* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office




• Excellent verbal and written communication and skills




• Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines 




• Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects 

*Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.

• Previous experience with whole-body cryo-sectioning a plus




• Working knowledge of sample preparation for imaging mass spectrometry preferred
