Job Description Summary

The L.A. Times High School Insider youth journalism program is calling for ambitious student journalists from Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange counties to join the 6th High School Insider Summer Internship cohort. Join a team of passionate young reporters and spend your summer telling the stories that matter most to young people.

As a HS Insider Intern, you will have the opportunity to experience life as a professional journalist: covering breaking news, crafting feature enterprise stories and experimenting in multimedia storytelling. During the 6-week virtual internship program, you’ll have the chance to pursue stories that you never would have imagined with the support of mentors, trainings and workshops from an award-winning newsroom.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

• Pitch, report and produce a feature enterprise story about an under-reported aspect of your community.


• Cover assigned stories on a variety of beats (news, sports, arts & entertainment, mental health and more) in collaboration with other interns.


• Produce and publish video segments and podcast episodes.


• Create social media campaigns to share and amplify your stories.


• Absorb and implement foundational journalistic skills.


• Fact-check and copyedit stories.


• Practice journalistic ethics.


• Cultivate media literacy.


• Present work to larger audiences.

• Passionate about writing and reporting.


• Curious, collaborative, and open-minded.


• Ability to manage time in a remote position.


• Strong communication skills.


• Eager to learn and grow.


• Must be able to work cooperatively and adaptively in a team setting.


• Must be able to work under pressure, multitask and produce high quality work in a deadline driven environment.


• Must be able to utilize computers, software systems and tools.


• Must be able to work irregular and/or long hours.


• Must be able to sit and/or stand for periods of up to 6 hours.


• Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.


• Must be able to travel.


• Must be able to handle up to 30 pounds of equipment.


• Must be able to engage physical movement on uneven surfaces in inclement weather subject to outside environmental conditions and noise.


• Applicants must reside in Los Angeles County, Ventura or Orange Counties.

Education:

• Applicants should be in High School or currently between High School and Freshman year of College.

Internship program design:

• The summer internship program is open to current high school students and recent high school graduates.




• The program runs for six weeks from June 21 – July 30.




• Interns will be paid $15 an hour.




• Students will need reliable internet access.

The program will run 5 days a week, Monday-Friday. Weekly and hourly scheduling will vary depending on what interns are covering but will not be longer than 6 work hours on any given day. HS Insider will make every effort to keep work hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break.
