POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:


 

The Research & Development Technical Operations Center of Excellence based at the Herbalife Innovation & Manufacturing Plant in Winston-Salem is looking for a high-caliber, passionate and engaged student for this internship. The Intern will work at the Winston Salem facility and work on a project requiring the scale-up of a new formulation.


 

The Intern will be exposed to all phases of a technical transfer. This includes the transition of a bench top formula to pilot, in a pilot plant, followed by production scale up in the manufacturing plant.  The process will expose the Intern to formulas, ingredients and processes leading to the identification of critical points of control for pilot batches, stability studies and production scale up.


 

The Intern will be under the supervision of an experienced mentor and will work with a Process Engineering expert. The Intern is expected to develop and present a preliminary working plan and provide regular updates.  This includes a mid-term progress report and a final presentation highlighting the results, lessons learned and suggestions to improve processes.


 

There will be multiple opportunities to interact professionally and socially with other cross-functional professionals such as Planning, Quality Assurance, Sourcing, Purchasing, Manufacturing and Engineering.


 

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: 


 


  • Material Characterization: Perform physical testing of key raw materials used in Herbalife products

  • Assess potential impact of raw material physical properties on finished product quality

  • Incorporate learnings into the R&D knowledge management system repository

  • Develop standard test methodology for assessing finished product flow properties using the Revolution and generate initial testing database

  • Calculate formula nutritional inputs for products manufactured at the Winston Salem site

  • Identify products where the formula input is not aligned with the product specifications and work with Process Engineers to generate Product Revision Requests as appropriate

  • Provide label claim and overage information to R&D Document Coordinator for incorporation into Master Batch Records

  • Compare calculated formula inputs with Genesis and update the database as appropriate

  • Compile release test data for formulas manufactured at Winston Salem

  • Work with Process Engineers to complete a process capability analysis to identify products/tests that have a high probability of out of specification results in the future

  • Help identify root cause for issues and action plans to resolve them

  • Recommend a process for systematic review of products in the future

  • Work with Technical Operations Process Engineers, Plant Technicians, and Project Specialist to help integrate information and data systems

  • Help organize and maintain Technical Operations Sharepoint site

    • 0–1 years of related Engineering/Science (internship) experience

     

    Education:   
     


    • A current junior or senior level student in an undergraduate Bachelor’s program or student in a graduate program pursuing  a Master’s degree majoring in Science, preferably in Food Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biology or other related field

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


     
    Experience:
     


    • Undergraduate lab (physics/chemistry/biology) experience

    • Technical high school graduate in a science field
