Job Summary


MIT Lincoln Laboratory Knowledge Services, comprised of the Laboratory's Research Library and Laboratory Archives, invites applications for the position of Collections and Electronic Resources Librarian. This position oversees all library activities involved in acquiring and providing descriptive records for electronic and print materials, including books and serials in a complex and dynamic Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC.) This position is also responsible for circulation and related access services activities. This is an excellent position for a library/information science professional who is experienced with acquisitions, electronic resources, and cataloging and who will be committed to creating and improving research and information delivery services with an eye to the future.

The Collections and Electronic Resources Librarian will participate in and play a critical role in the Research Library Team by leading all collections based efforts including acquisition, licensing, cataloging, catalog record maintenance, collection development, and access services for a collection of approximately 100,000 items (both print and electronic). In addition, the selected candidate will engage with colleagues in exploring, planning for, and implementing technological innovations to facilitate and improve library collections and collection access. The candidate will supervise two support staff as well. The position requires an incumbent with attention to detail, curiosity, and initiative to improve these operations and to contribute to Knowledge Services' efforts to remain abreast of information resources, technologies, and services.


Job Responsibilities



  • Acquisitions and Cataloging responsibilities - oversee and manage all library activities involved in acquiring and providing descriptive records for print and electronic materials, including books and serials, for the Research Library and Laboratory staff, and includes the following:



    • Oversee acquisitions and deaccessioning of books and journals, digital media, and electronic site licenses (both Library and customer copies).

    • Provide quality control for all catalog entries to insure content discovery and access, including detailed records on electronic subscriptions using Coral.

    • Collaborate with MIT Libraries on joint site license issues.

    • Supervise the cataloging and processing of all materials, i.e., books, serials, and electronic resources, using OCLC, Coral, and Sirsi, including copy cataloging of new materials and updating records with electronic holdings. Requires a thorough understanding of bibliographic, holdings, and electronic resource records.

    • Working with metadata specialists, investigate and implement the latest technologies that support access to electronic information, including use of Laboratory-wide controlled vocabulary and metadata.

    • Develop and maintain effective vendor relations, including monitoring performance of book and serial vendors for major contracts. Prepare RFPs for contract renewals with vendors.




  • Access Services responsibilities - oversee and supervise circulation and interlibrary loan (ILL) activities; cover circulation duties as needed.

  • Collection Development and Maintenance responsibilities - use Gobi and other resources to select proposed materials for staff review for inclusion in the collections. Oversee approval plan in Gobi. Create and maintain a collection development plan for Lincoln Laboratory. Oversee print (stack maintenance, weeding, etc.) and online collections (evaluation, usage stats, licensing).


Requirements



  • Experience in a Sci/Tech environment and/or a degree in Engineering or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution

  • 2-4 years of experience and expertise with materials acquisitions, licensing, e-resource management, cataloging, collection management and development.

  • Expertise using library systems such as OCLC (ILL and cataloging), SIRSI or other library catalog system, Coral, Gobi, MarcEdit.

  • Familiarity or expertise with AACR2/RDA, copy cataloging.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are needed, with ability to work well within a team.

  • Successful candidates must have the ability to take initiative and to be self-directed and motivated.

  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills with an aptitude for complex and detailed work.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to maintain communication channels with customers, management, and other Knowledge Services personnel in a team-oriented environment.

  • Strong service orientation is a must.

  • Experience with MS365, spreadsheets (Excel).


Preferred Qualifications



  • Master of Science in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited institution

  • Understanding of collection development practices related to the scientific, technical, and report literature.

  • Professional understanding of collaboration technologies, taxonomies, ontologies, and content management systems.

  • Experience with circulation and interlibrary loan (ILL) activities.

  • Experience with VuFind, Drupal
