The Office of the Bursar is Cornell University's central billing service center for tuition, fees, and other charges incurred by students, and proactively assists families to manage their financial obligations to the university by offering dependable customer service and a variety of financial services, including the CornellCard program (a service that allows students to make purchases by presenting their Cornell ID cards), Cashnet (for online billing, payments, and installment plans), and the Direct Deposit program for student refunds. The Bursar also bills for and collects payment for Cornell-administered student loans, university receivables, and delinquent Bursar and CornellCard accounts.

What you will be doing:

As a critical team member in Cornell University's Office of the Bursar, the Senior Systems Analyst will perform a variety of important IT related activities to support student billing and other related services. Using your creativity, your ability to accumulate sophisticated knowledge, and your collaboration skills, you will find solutions to complex problems.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:


  • Analyze, define, test, implement, and maintain bursar applications including PeopleSoft student financials and integrations with new, upgraded, and enhanced vendor services.


  • Provide business analysis. In partnership with the bursar and associate bursar, evaluate changes in business environment and recommend potential enhancements to systems that will meet them.


  • Configure PeopleSoft Student Financials as needed to facilitate proper calculations of fees, placement and removal of holds, allocation of payments, etc. Work in conjunction with PeopleSoft Student team, University Registrar, Financial Aid and other University departments to ensure accurate data.


  • Perform security administration for Cornellcard and PeopleSoft student financials systems and for interfaces/transaction feeds with other bursar third party services systems. Manage user access to vendor platforms.


  • Develop testing plans. Test and review new and modified systems to ensure that they perform properly.


  • Develop, coordinate, and provide systems training to bursar staff. Provide technical information, analysis, and reporting in support of the bursar operations.


  • Oversee and audit data within systems. Verify compliance with established procedures and policies.


Overtime may be required during peak times to complete daily responsibilities.

This position has an anticipated start date of July 2021.

Potential Ongoing Remote

This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the University's need to limit the number of on-campus employees, the successful applicant will be asked to perform this role remotely at a location of their choice in the United States. This position may be considered for ongoing remote-work status, even once the campus permits more employees to work on campus.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.

What are the required qualifications?

Bachelor's degree in systems or business management with at least 3 to 5 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

We also look for the following experiences and abilities:


  • High level of conscientiousness and attention to detail.


  • Skills in system testing applications to identify performance, data integrity, and functionality problems. Experience in identifying, researching, analyzing and interpreting technical information from a variety of sources to resolve complex problems. Aptitude for understanding and maintaining a complex configuration structure.


  • Strong database query skills or aptitude.


  • Must be capable of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment and utilizing sophisticated reasoning/analytical skills. Must be able to implement logical and practical solutions to highly complex technical and business problems. Have a proven ability to communicate, build and maintain effective relationships and collaborate with individuals and administrative offices.


  • Must be able to learn and apply new technical knowledge. Experience providing technical training, direction, and guidance to others. Strong skills in technology tools (Visio, Excel, Word, database query skills, etc.).


  • Must be able to protect the confidentiality of sensitive information.


In addition to these requirements, we would value someone that has 3-4 years' experience in a higher education setting with PeopleSoft or other administrative system experience preferred; PeopleSoft or other system certification/training helpful. Knowledge of Cornell's student/administrative systems and processes a plus. Experience in Bursar/billing operations also a plus. Knowledge and experience with Project Management methodology helpful. Experience in migration and/or computer system implementation desired.
