Position Overview

 

The Payroll Tax Accountant supports the in-house Payroll Tax function for CRH Americas Materials, reporting to the Payroll Tax Manager.  This role is responsible for complex level payroll tax calculations, reporting, balancing, analysis and audit activities to ensure accurate and timely payment and reporting. This role is the technical and functional subject matter expert and continually works with their team to identify opportunities for improvement and implements solutions.    

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

 


  • Process Federal, Multi-State and Local tax payments for weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly and monthly pay frequencies for 57 EIN’s (24,000+ employees).

  • Prepare payroll tax returns for Local withholdings and State Unemployment Insurance for all states except Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

  • Communicate directly with tax agencies and division partners to resolve complex tax issues.

  • Validate employee tax set ups to ensure they are accurate and the proper federal, state and local taxes are being deducted and remitted for all employees; in addition to validating unemployment calculations for 57 legal entities.

  • Analyze reports from payroll system to ensure tax deposits and filing of federal, and state tax returns are accurate and process tax amendments when necessary.

  • Review tax notices from federal, state and Local jurisdictions and determine the necessary course of action required.

  • Participate in the annual W2 & W2C processing, reconciling and verification process.

  • Assist with responses to inquiries from management, taxing authorities and Accounting regarding tax withholding, liabilities, payments and GL inquiries.

  • Provide back-up support for Payroll Tax Manager - Responsible for timely tax set ups, W2C processing and wage adjustments.

  • Provide back-up support for Banking functions - Responsible for entering off-cycle checks, issuing voids & stop payments, confirming ACH & PP file submissions and other banking functions as required.

  • Other duties as directed by management.

 

Qualifications

Education/Experience

 


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance preferred, or minimum 5 years of equivalent experience in payroll tax filing.

  • FPC (Fundamental Payroll Certification) or CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) preferred.

  • Solid grasp of payroll principles, wage and hour law, payroll taxes.

  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local withholding tax computations and deposit/filing requirements.

 

Work Requirements

 


  • PC literate: Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook, and mainframe payroll application experience.

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

  • Willingness to work independently within in a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.

  • Must be able to able to work under time constraints and ensure deadlines are me

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

 


  • Comfortable working in a fast pace, high volume and deadline driven atmosphere.

  • Pay close attention to details.

  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local withholding tax computations and deposit/filing requirements.

  • Working knowledge of IN, KY, MI, OH and PA locals a strong plus.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required.

  • Must be able to multi-task between daily banking functions and payroll tax duties daily.

  • Must be able to able to work under time constraints and ensure deadlines are met.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

  • PC literate: Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook, and mainframe payroll application experience.

  • Intermediate/Advanced Excel skills a must. 

  • Demonstrate strong “customer service” focus.
