McBee, South Carolina is home to 500+ A. O. Smith employees in Manufacturing and Product Engineering for our Commercial Water Heaters and Boilers, a category where we are the industry leader with over 50% market share. Our Manufacturing Engineering department currently has 8 Engineers that are constantly evaluating and improving the processes and procedures of the production process, from fabrication to assembly.

The Manufacturing Engineer Intern / Co-op will allow you to apply skills and knowledge you're learning in College, while contributing to exciting, real-world projects. We will provide hands-on experience to fit your career goals, complement your academic work and enhance your learning. We have two work options available:


  • A co-op would work full-time, either June 2021to December 2021, or January 2021to August 2021

  • An intern would work year-round, full-time (40 hours/week) in summer and part-time (15+ hours/week) during the school year


Responsibilities



  • Gain industry and organizational knowledge through daily business interactions and job assignments.

  • Develop business, financial and analytical skills needed for career of his or her choice.

  • Support assigned team inproject creation and staffing, project closing, project plan development, etc.

  • Works independently and is responsible for meeting deadlines and setting priorities.

  • Updates manager regarding project status on a regular basis.

  • Demonstrates ability to respond quickly and appropriately to the needs as identified.


Job Duties



  • Apply sound ergonomic and safety practices in all functions of manufacturing process, equipment and facilities.

  • Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods using data collection,analysis and experience.

  • Assist Engineers in researching New Technologies and Processes in support of improving Manufacturing Efficiencies, Productivity, Cost Savings and/or Product Quality.

  • Develop Capital Cost Justification for New Product Tooling, Equipment, Cost Savings Initiatives, etc.

  • Analyze and plan workforce utilization, space requirements, and workflow, and design layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency.

  • Product Development System (PDS) Team Member ensuring Design for Manufacturability (DFM), tooling and equipment needs are met to ensure efficient manufacturing processes and successful product launch.

  • Partners with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.

  • Estimate production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions.

  • Partners with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.

  • Understand and implement Quality andLean Manufacturing Principles such as Continuous Improvement, Blitzes, KanBan, Line Balancing, TPM, Takt Time, etc.

  • Work closely with maintenance personnel in troubleshooting problems as needed and equipment installation and set-up.


Qualifications



  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree of Engineering program

  • 3D CAD experience (ex: Solidworks) and 2D CAD experience (ex: AutoCad) a plus

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Adaptability and ability to learn quickly in high-pressure environments

  • Self-starter who has demonstrated the ability to contribute as an effective team member

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated motivation and initiative to succeed

  • Knowledge and interest in A. O. Smith Corporation

  • Willingness and ability to give presentations to colleagues, managers and directors

  • Comfortable working with confidential information
