Job Description:

POSITION OVERVIEW

San Diego Christian College (SDCC), as an academic and learning community, aims to prepare academically equipped, culturally and globally involved graduates with a biblical worldview and godly character to serve God. The Department of Athletics raises up Christian athletes to develop in their faith, athletic and leadership skills, and seeks to glorify God through good sportsmanship, service, excellence and identity in Christ. The department of Athletics is an influential segment of campus that leads by example, sharing Christ at games and practices through both word and deed.

The Head Coach promotes skills development, provides instruction, recruits student athletes to uphold the Champions of Character philosophy (Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership), manages the volleyball department budget, schedules contests and collaborates with other SDCC faculty and staff to support and further the mission, vision, and values of the institution.

CATEGORY AND LEVEL

Coach 2 (Head Coach): Within their particular area or sport, promotes skills development, provides instruction, recruits student athletes to uphold the Champions of Character philosophy (Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership), manages their area or sports department budget, schedules contests and collaborates with other SDCC faculty and staff to support and further the mission, vision, and values of the institution. Spends time performing tasks in the unit and typically supervises at least one part-time assistant coach working in a seasonal capacity. Supervises unit operations and ensures accountability and stewardship of departmental resources (operational, financial and human) to ensure compliance with departmental or organizational policies, procedures and internal controls.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  1. Recruitment (55%)


    1. Recruits student athletes capable of succeeding at an institution of higher learning while upholding the 5 core values of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character: Integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

    2. Attends games and/or practices of potential recruits.

    3. Maintains communication throughout recruitment process (written and oral).

    4. Schedules on-campus visit days with the assistance of the SDCC Admissions team.

    5. Coordinates medical clearance for recruits to participate with the Athletic Trainers.

    6. Assists with eligibility and admissions requirements with the Associate Athletic Director (AAD) and SDCC Admissions team.

    7. Budgets and offers Letters of Intent (LOI) to future and returning student athletes.

    8. Assists with financial aid clearance with the SDCC Financial Aid team.


  2. Administration (12%)

    1. Manages budgets pertaining to the operations of the volleyball team.

    2. Attends all SDCC, Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC), and NAIA meetings as indicated.

    3. Provides all statistics for individual student athletes in conjunction with the Sports Information Director (SID).


  3. Student Athlete Development (10%)

    1. Teaches all skills necessary for the student athletes to master the game.

    2. Leads practices and games exemplifying the values of the NAIA Champions of Character.

    3. Monitors academic progress throughout the school year with AAD and faculty.

    4. Facilitates individual mentor meetings with student athletes.


  4. Practice and Game Preparation (10%)

    1. Develops time efficient, productive, successful plans for practices and games.

    2. Scouts opponents (film, in person etc.)


  5. Athletic Operations (8%)

    1. Provides assistance and support to the Sports Information Director (SID) for game day set up, filming, break down, and acts as an administrative representative for SDCC to the visiting teams and officials.


  6. Supervisor duties to include: (5%)

    1. Delegates tasks and provides effective direction to team members to produce substantial results.

    2. Screens applications, interviews candidates and recommends individuals for hiring.

    3. Trains and assigns work to new and continuing employees.

    4. Independently conducts frequent performance feedback at least quarterly throughout the year, as well as the 90-day and annual performance evaluations.

    5. Trains, coaches and supports professional development of all direct reports.

    6. Makes recommendations for employee incentive awards and salary increases including merits and reclassifications.

    7. In conjunction with HR, determines discipline for direct reports.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge


  • Bachelors degree in a related field.

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience coaching at the collegiate level.

  • Familiar with National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) compliance regulations.

  • CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) / AED (automated external defibrillator) certified.

  • Valid, unexpired California Class C Drivers License required.

  • Valid, unexpired California Class C Commercial Drivers License (CDL) preferred.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, reach, see, key, hear, work independently, and communicate effectively. Ability to physically coach at practices and games and also drive between practices and competitions. May also require ability to transport practice and/or competition equipment.

Mental Activities

Frequent oral communication, reading, writing, calculating, reasoning, analyzing.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


  • Background check required.

  • Must be available to work nights and weekends as needed.

  • Travel as needed (practice, competitions, meetings)

  • Valid, unexpired California Class C Drivers License required.
