Job Description:

Job Purpose: The Training Specialist III supports the Learning & Development strategy for all global employees by development and delivery of effective virtual and in-person Instructor Led Training (ILT) solutions. They partner with subject matter experts and key stakeholders and recommend training strategies, tools, and materials that support enhanced job performance and increased productivity in alignment with the Sonoco's Key Business Initiatives. This position will be successful by collaborating and utilizing effective influencing and team collaboration skills to work with others in Learning and Development, partners across Talent Management, and a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the organization. Will lead global special and cross-functional project teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Training Development and Roll-Out


  • Collaborates with the instructional design team, and internal stakeholders to identify learning needs within the function, determine strategies and execute learning solutions that meet those needs.

  • Partner with the instructional design team, and internal stakeholders to assess training development requests, their alignment to organizational priorities, and training methodologies needed to implement highly effective learning solutions.

  • Execute global learning initiatives across their designated function or division, coordinating efforts with their HR partner, functional subject matter experts and business leadership.

  • Apply instructional design methods and adult learning principles to ensure that course design and content meet learning goals. Create outlines and scripts that provide program structure.

  • Facilitate training programs that include, but are not limited to train-the-trainer programs, employee development sessions, sales training, leadership training, facilitation / training, employee orientation/onboarding, etc.

  • Partner with the Subject Matter Experts and Global Marketing and Communications Team to create learning marketing materials and processes that attract learners to Training sessions.

  • Provide frequent and effective communication around project status and application effectiveness.

  • Plan and coordinate skill assessments and testing to measure participant retention.

  • Track and analyze learning programs by examining course evaluations, proficiency testing and job performance to identify program effectiveness. Makes changes or enhancements as appropriate.

Day to Day


  • Coach and develop supervisors, managers, and plant trainers in cross-cultural environments to produce and deliver high quality employee and management training offerings that demonstrate business impact.

  • Define project schedules and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Keep track of project tasks and status using online project management software.

  • Partner closely with the Learning & Development team to ensure alignment to the broader company strategy and training calendar.

  • Participate in team brainstorming and strategy meetings to help define goals and direction.

  • Keep up to date on key industry trends and research; recommend best practices, KPIs and benchmarks.

  • Provide frequent and effective communication around project status and application effectiveness.

  • Exemplify the desired culture and philosophies of the organization

  • Mentor, coach, and positively influence less experienced team members to accelerate professional development.

Knowledge, Skills and Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Education, Training, or related field; Master's preferred

  • Strong analytical and research skills.

  • 5+ years corporate training experience; expertise in Productivity, Manufacturing, and Operations

  • General needs and gap analysis skills.

  • Experience working in a cross-cultural training environment a must.

  • Must be highly influential and able to interact and impact high level functional leaders.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of projects with varying levels of complexity to successful completion with minimal supervision.

  • Strong influence, negotiation, creative problem solving and people management skills.

  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to quickly absorb large amounts of information and reduce to teachable segments

  • Project management and analytical experience required.

  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (Workday) is a plus.
