Job Description



Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an experienced engineer to join ourCore Performance Analysis team. This group performs reactor designwork for operational and next generation Naval Nuclear Reactors. The successful candidate will act as an expert to inform core materials development efforts and strategies, and will be a critical contributor to the most challenging technical issues. Cognizant areas include the modeling, analyzing, documenting, and test planning for nuclear analysis of fuel and poison elements. Work may generally includestatistical assessments of data, materials evaluations, design reviews, validation and interpretation of test data, fleet support, safety analysis, and analysis of vendor's procedures, systems, and results.

The successful candidate for this role will accelerate strategic efforts within core performance that include:


  • leveraging and leading new contractual relationships with universities to advance novel concepts or unmet needs in irradiation testing technology and core materials,

  • leading multi-disciplinary efforts to advance core materials technologies both in the traditional Naval PWR sphere and in the area of new development, and

  • advisingTechnology leadership in external advances and directions in order to better adapt strategies within Core Materials Engineering.







Required Skills




  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of twelve years of relevant experience; or

  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of ten years of relevant experience; or

  • Currently or previously a Shift Supervisor or SIT in the Nuclear Operations Program; or

  • CRE Qualification or SRE qualified with nine years of experience







Preferred Skills




  • Educational background inChemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics

Experience


  • In nuclear fuel and poison material development, which could include concept development from initiation to fabrication to irradiation testing application; reactor core performance and design basis assessment; characterization of performance attributes, reactor design, and fuel performance modeling.

  • With PWR technology and Generation III-IV reactor concepts and technologies

  • Advising management on fuel performance needs and technical aspects of strategic direction

  • Reviewing comprehensive design documentation and analysis

  • Leading strategically oriented technical deliverables

  • Leveraging relationships with technical leadership both within NNL and in the broader nuclear community

  • Providing training and coaching on complex technical subjects

  • Leading teams of engineers and driving strategic initiatives
