Sustainability Specialist

Your Role

As a Sustainability Specialist at Gensler, you will join a highly creative, collaborative team dedicated to innovative problem solving and design excellence. You will work with the Northeast Sustainability Consulting team in providing a full spectrum of sustainability advisory and support to clients and project teams, from pre-design through post-occupancy.

What You Will Do


You will lead or participate in consulting engagements that provide sustainability strategies for a wide range of world class clients and projects ranging from commercial interiors to ground up buildings and real estate portfolios. You will manage the certification process and provide design guidance on projects pursuing LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard, Fitwel and/or Net Zero Building Certification. Additionally, you will employ technical analysis, research skills, and experience in integrated design to elevate sustainability across projects.


  • Undertake performance analysis including but not limited to daylight, energy, climate, and whole-building lifecycle/embodied carbon assessment

  • Work with clients and design teams to establish sustainable design and project certification goals, employing feasibility analysis or other methods to facilitate goal setting

  • Design and facilitate work sessions with clients and design teams to build consensus on sustainable design solutions

  • Coordinate with project design teams to provide sustainable design guidance, technical support, and certification process management, participating and leading in client meetings when necessary

  • Provide oversight and coordinate integration of BIM, lifecycle assessment, energy modeling, daylighting and other technical analysis in projects

  • Coordinate the work of multiple consultants and supervise the work of project team members

  • Establish and manage project fees, staffing, and client invoicing

  • Ensure quality control and consistency across all projects

  • Identify and maintain awareness of current and emerging technologies, tools, and methods as they impact the delivery of green building design

  • Track Federal, State, and local regulations and incentives and provide guidance to clients

  • Ensure sustainable design projects status are integrated into Gensler Digital Library

  • Ensure that lessons learned are shared across projects

Your Qualifications


  • Bachelor or Master's degree in sustainable building, architecture, engineering, interiors or related field, or equivalent work experience

  • LEED Accreditation required, additional accreditations a plus

  • 5+ years of post-graduate experience in a similar role

  • Strong knowledge of building performance analytics, climatic and passive design principles, and integrative design practice

  • Strong knowledge of building systems, project management, and consultant coordination (current expertise or interest/aptitude to build expertise quickly)

  • Strong knowledge of LEED and certification project management, gained through directly relevant project experience and education

  • Ability to provide technical oversight in other areas of high-performance sustainability a plus (e.g. specification writing, materials selection, cost and life cycle studies, etc.)

  • Experience with carbon footprinting, climate action planning, climate change resiliency assessment, environmental and social governance (ESG), and/or decarbonization strategy a plus

  • Experience with data science and/or data visualization a plus

  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship management skills

  • Innovator, ability to create and successfully implement new programs

  • Strong writing, speaking, organizational skills, and technical presentation ability

  • Able to mentor, teach and train effectively

  • Self-directed and able to synthesize new information quickly

  • Detail-oriented

  • A sense of humor and a knack for innovation and problem solving, and a collaborative, solutions-oriented working style

Technical Skills


  • Proficient user of LEED Online, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and InDesign

  • Familiarity with Revit, Rhino, and Grasshopper

  • Proficiency with building simulation and LCA software such as OpenStudio/EnergyPlus, DIVA, Climate Studio, OneClick LCA

  • Proficiency with NYC and NY State Energy Code, ASHRAE standards, and local laws

  • Familiarity with relational databases and data analytics software such as R, Tableau, or PowerBI a plus

  • Coding experience a plus

  • Proficiency with Passivhaus and/or THERM a plus

  • Familiarity with Salesforce, and other project management tools such as Smartsheet or Teams Planner, or willingness to learn

  • Familiarity with digital collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, and willingness to learn others such as Miro and/or Mural
