The Manager of Child Life Services is responsible for all activities and operations for the Child Life/Creative Arts Therapy services department. Child Life Services provides a safe and nurturing environment where children and adolescents can enrich coping skills, address psycho-social needs, and increase understanding of issues related to medical experiences. Administrative responsibilities would require strong leadership skills and include human resource and department budget responsibilities.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of the Manager of Child Life Services at Hackensack MeridianHealth includes:

Manage the day-to-day operations of the Child Life/Creative Arts Therapy department
• Adhere to the Child Life Code of Ethics approved by the Association for Child Life Professionals (ACLP).


• Responsible for child life staff recruitment and development. Includes the hiring, disciplining, and performance appraisals of staff and the completion of job specific competencies and annual mandatory education.


• Support and mentor staff to provide appropriate child life services to patients and family members.


• Identify the needs of the patient population served and develop care plan that is specific to those needs (i.e., age. culture, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.) This process includes communicating with the patient, parent and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).


• Develop and assess child life programming, policies and procedures.


• Provide education to the clinical care team about child life services.


• Coordinate with Foundation for grants, donations and events.


• Oversee volunteer and child life internship program.


• Oversee financial budget of department, including monthly expense monitoring and development of annual budget.


• Provide clinical coverage, as needed, to support areas offering child life services.

Qualifications

• Must be a Certified Child Life Specialist offering services to children/adolescents in a medical setting for minimum of 5 years


• Leadership experience for minimum of 2 years as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) required


• Bachelor's degree in child life, child development or related field is required


• Master's degree in child life, child development or related field is preferred


• Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) credential required, as issued by the Child Life Certification Commission, a subsidiary of the Association of Child Life Professionals
