Job Description Summary

The Principal Engineer - Boiler Systems Specialist position develops, supports, and documents the company steam and energy systems strategic vision as well as provide leadership and support to plants for development and implementation of capital projects. Main areas of accountability center on boiler & steam systems and the long-term preservation of plant steam generation and boiler feed-water systems. Priority responsibilities focus on assessment and documentation of existing systems, laying out company strategic direction for boiler and steam systems, and direction and support of boiler system related projects and best practices. Work also includes preparation of studies, reports, schedules, budgets, inspections, bid requests, evaluation of bid submittals, direction and coordination of contractors, and project closeouts and analysis.
As a highly skilled boiler and steam systems SME (subject matter expert), this position also serves as a consultant to others to provide technical information and engineering recommendations as well as review design and project documentation to ensure compliance with performance criteria, company and regulatory standards, and best practices. As leader of the Lamb Weston boiler strategy, conducts feasibility studies for emerging technologies, determines viability for use within the Lamb Weston framework, and helps develop engineering criteria for implementation of the technologies.
This job requires a high level of in-depth steam and energy systems technical skills (including feedwater and water treatment), organizational and communication skills, and may involve significant travel and on-site time at various plants within the Lamb Weston system. Responsible for development and training Lamb Weston associates in best practices for effective and efficient steam generation and usage.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned).


  • Lead enterprise steam and energy system initiatives, resources, and long-term strategies.

  • Serve as leader and mentor through focused technical expertise, innovation and leadership.

  • Provide guidance and development on best practices for plant steam generation systems.

  • Coach, teach, and train operations and maintenance teams on boiler and steam fundamentals and advanced operational skills. This also includes expertise in steam systems' supporting water and water treatment.

  • Monitor effectiveness of overall program and condition of our steam generation facilities.

  • Identify and promote energy savings and system improvement opportunities.

  • Work with Lamb Weston procurement professionals to ensure water care and treatment service providers are effective.

  • Accountable for timely, accurate and effective implementation of engineering and project related work.

  • Develop and advance professional capabilities of the department.

  • Leadership of project teams in effective project implementations.



  • Meet or exceed project quality, cost, schedule and performance metrics.




Required Qualifications:



  • BS/MS in Engineering or related Science field.

  • Experience as a technical resource in steam generation and water treatment.

  • Experience with design, operation, maintenance of boiler systems including feed-water systems.

  • Experience in energy savings and sustainability initiatives

  • Skills in coaching, teaching, and training.



  • 10+ years of experience in food processing and steam systems (including water treatment).

  • Experience in project management and maintenance engineering is desired.

  • Manufacturing plant experience in production/quality assurance/support.

  • Must be detail orientated, possess excellent technical and analytical skills, and be a proven self-starter.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated capability to work on teams and support others.

  • Proficiency in desktop applications to include Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
