Position Purpose

The Technician Assistant plays an integral role in the advanced veterinary care provided by Central Texas Veterinary Surgery. This role goes hand in hand with our purpose statement of enhancing the quality of life for our patients.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

• Restrain animals for examinations, procedures, and treatments.


• Assist technicians with animals.


• Assist in taking radiographs.


• Open rooms to be used for surgery.


• Set up surgery rooms and clean them after procedures.


• Clean, wrap and sterilize instruments, surgical packs, gowns, and drapes.


• Knowledge of names and locations of all instruments and equipment used in surgery.


• Scrub in and assist in surgeries as needed.


• Bathe animals.


• Perform nail trims.


• Feed and walk patients as needed.


• Take patients vital signs including temperature, pulse, and respiration.


• Perform suture and staple removal.


• Prepare prescriptions as ordered by the doctor.


• Perform routine laboratory procedures.


• Maintain cleanliness and order in work areas.


• Perform kennel duties as required.


• Perform inventory and restocking duties as required.

Special Position Requirements

Overtime and Saturdays may be required.

Physical Effort

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, talk, and listen; may require extended periods of time on feet. Use hands to manipulate, handle, feel or reach with hands and arms. Required to lift up to forty pounds. Employees will be expected to acquire assistance with lifting or carrying animals or materials over 40 pounds.

Work Requirements

1. Radiation exposure (x-ray, CT Scan)


2. Possible exposure to gas sterilization using ethylene oxide


3. Hazards associated with infected animals, controlled substances, and possible exposure to contagious diseases


4. Exposures to unpleasant odors and noises


5. Exposure to aggressive patients, bites, scratches and animal wastes

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. Some veterinary experience preferred but not required. Basic customer service skills required. Basic computer skills necessary.
