Job Summary
We are looking for a qualified candidate to support on-base research efforts in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. At the broadest level our research group plans, directs and conducts in house and extramural research and development of materials technologies with an emphasis on functional applications.

The Light-Matter Interactions in Structured Optical Media (LMISOM) group, part of the Photonics Branch of the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (RXAP) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is looking for a research grade candidate ideally versed in at least two of the following fields: optics & photonics, numerical computation, machine learning, and wave propagation.

Many Air Force applications requiring high power lasers are limited to emission wavelengths available from standard gain media, forcing them to function at non-eye-safe spectral regions, known wavelengths that adversaries monitor, and sub-optimal frequencies for operational needs. In this regard, the LMISOM group is concerned with the design, process, and modeling of stratified optical media to enable low-cost and scalable agile optical materials for directed energy applications.

The candidate will be tasked with harnessing sophisticated academic and commercial simulation tools applicable to nonlinear optic based material systems. The high throughput output data of these codes will feed into developed machine learning algorithms used for materials inverse design. Available resources include a high-performance workstation, the MARVEL minicluster, access to on- and off- base supercomputing resources, and a supportive team familiar with all aspects of the project.

Roles and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will implement fundamental scientific principles and sound logic, combining theoretical and experimental concepts, in a computational lab to foster discovery and definition of novel materials, structures, processes, and device designs. This will entail:

1. Utilizing and augmenting open source computational code, and/or designing (programming) novel computer code

2. Working with limited data sets to model material/structure/device/process parameters

3. Working design concepts through reverse engineering practice

4. Working with unlimited data sets to cull design of material/structure/devices

5. Designing and implementing virtual verification and validation of novel models created

6. Collaborating with internal and external teammates, customers, and partners to create objectives and work plans, review designs,
support experimentation, and/or transition technical designs

7. Attending/presenting at technical conferences (posters or briefings)

8. Writing peer-reviewed technical articles for publication

Education, Experience and Skills

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science/Engineering, Optics, Opto-Electronics, Chemistry, or closely related science/engineering/technology field.

  • Ideal Candidates Traits

  • Proficiency in scientific poised programming languages with an emphasis on Python and C++

  • Past experience in computational electromagnetics and a background in nonlinear optics

  • Experience in university level research exemplified with a strong peer reviewed publication list.

Physical Requirements / Travel

  • Must be able to work in a lab environment and lift or carry up to 25 pounds.

  • Must be able to work in an office environment, at a desk and computer, the majority of the time.

  • Minimal travel would be required, <10% time, to CONUS locations. Travel is generally for technical forums/presentations/interchange.
