CULTURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT PRACTICE

Our Cultural Resources Management practice, embedded under our Environmental Planning practice, performs a diverse array of cultural resources services for a wide spectrum of federal, state, and local agency clients, as well as private organizations. We provide archaeological and architectural history services that include California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental compliance projects, as well as preservation planning services to aid local agencies in identifying and preserving their historical resources. Exciting architectural history project types include city-wide historic context development, survey and evaluation of historic-era resources, mitigation documentation, National Register of Historic Places nominations, provision of cultural resources training, municipal preservation planning, historic design guideline development, grant writing, and public education and outreach.

DESCRIPTION

An architectural historian will complete a variety of tasks including field survey and photography of historic-era resources, historic research at various repositories, writing architectural descriptions, developing historic context statements, and conducting National Register of Historic Places, California Register of Historical Resources, and various local register evaluations. The position includes technical report preparation and CEQA/NEPA environmental documents as well as other tasks as assigned. The position requires strong research and writing skills and working with MS Word and Adobe. Travel for field survey will occasionally be required throughout California.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS


  • MA degree in Public History, History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or related field Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History (36 CFR Part 61)
  • 5 years of experience working as an architectural historian
  • Strong on-line and archival repository research skills
  • Working knowledge of CEQA/NEPA/Section 106 of the NHPA
  • Demonstrated ability to author National Register/California Register/local register evaluations and/or nominations
  • Demonstrated ability to author CEQA/NEPA/Section 106 of the NHPA technical reports including identification and evaluation studies, finding of effect reports, memorandum of agreements, and programmatic agreements.
  • Demonstrated ability to author CEQA/NEPA environmental document sections for cultural resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead architectural field surveys and technical report projects.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence with crafting and fulfilling cultural resources mitigation measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare project proposals with detailed scope task breakdowns, schedules and budgets.
  • Ability to communicate through all contemporary business mediums (i.e., email, telephone, video conferencing)
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • Excellent analytical skills and exceptional technical writing ability.
  • Ability to travel throughout California and other western states if necessary.
  • Best candidate can work out of any of our offices in California and/or remotely.
  • Ability to travel and conduct research throughout California and the western US.
  • A valid California driver's license.
