Job Description:

Job Summary: Under the administrative supervision of the Vice President of Prevention Services, the prevention specialist will utilize a parenting curriculum The Parent Project to build constructive relationships and support networks among parents/ guardians of juvenile served youth. Providing a strength-based and solution focused approach with parents and youth. This includes identifying, understanding, and responding to the barriers of parents/ guardians and building relationships with agencies and stakeholders. This position will also provide Teen Intervene; a 2-3 session evidence-based intervention program that can identify a substance use disorder in youth that have violated codes of conduct related to substance use in their school. The Prevention Specialist shall operate in accordance with the policies set forth by the Board of Directors and shall abide by all applicable laws and regulations.

Responsibilities:


  1. Competency to deliver four 10-week parenting classes each year with a minimum of 10 participants.

  2. Skills to build relationships with local schools to promote and deliver Teen Intervene.

  3. Skilled in establishing and cultivating strong community relationships with youth and adults.

  4. Identify, understand, and respond to the barriers of parents/ guardians and build relationships with agencies and stakeholders.

  5. Provide Teen Intervene; a 2-3 session evidence-based intervention program that can identify a substance use disorder in youth that have violated codes of conduct related to substance use in their school.

  6. Efficient in collecting data related to impact of the program per grant guidelines.

  7. Ability to be sensitive and responsive to cultural and ethnic differences of the population served.

  8. Capable of maintaining a team spirit. Ability to work cooperatively with others.

  9. Must be adaptable to change and have effective organizational skills.

  10. Employee must be able to organize and follow through on multiple tasks.

  11. Understanding of basic media skills, relations, and methods.

  12. Carry out other duties assigned by the Vice President of Prevention.

Qualifications


  1. Graduate of a four-year accredited college or university with a bachelors degree in Education, Social work, Sociology, Psychology or related field.

  2. Able to handle a variety of tasks relevant to the job, including the ability to positively impact family systems.

  3. Excellent interpersonal skills required as well as ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 

  4. Experience or skill development in public relations and/or public speaking is desirable.

  5. Specialized training or continuing education in the programs dealing with the prevention of substance abuse in youth preferred.

  6. Display consistent, good judgment and decision-making skills.

  7. Must be able to pass agency required background or security check.

  8. Employees who have been diagnosed with any type of substance use disorder or behavioral health addiction/compulsion must have sustained a minimum of two consecutive years of abstinence from all intoxicating substances and symptoms of their chemical and/or behavioral addiction; and must be in full sustained remission.

  9. Physical requirements would include but not limited to standing, walking, talking, hearing, and lifting (40/50 pounds). Walking stairs may be required as well.
