CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical laboratory duties in support of instructional and/or research programs. The principal emphasis is on laboratory animal care & husbandry. Independent judgment and practical understanding of the application of scientific techniques are required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs a variety of technical duties involved in conducting or assisting in scientific tests.
  • Responsible for the daily care and health of laboratory animals in compliance with USDA and PHS policies and guidelines.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of animal facilities and equipment in compliance with USDA and PHS policies and guidelines.
  • Administers treatments, including injections, to laboratory animals as prescribed. Procures and sets up laboratory equipment, instruments and materials used in performing scheduled tests or experiments in the laboratory.
  • Operates various electronic devices in the collection, tabulation and/or calculation of data.
  • Maintains and operates standard laboratory equipment, which may include pH meter, cleaning and sterilizing instruments, glassware, cages, etc.
  • Records experimental procedures, measurements, observations and results of tests; recognizes and documents any deviation from expected results.
  • Maintains necessary records for reports.
  • Responsible for requisition, security and inventory of animals, supplies and/or equipment.
  • Prepares and/or processes samples for analyses.
  • Under the direction of the attending veterinarian, facility manager and the principal investigator, maintains animal breeding colonies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Daily requirement to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Requires a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience working with laboratory animals.
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science [AALAS] Assistant Animal Technician certification required.
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of laboratory animal techniques, procedures, instrumentation and principles of the appropriate science; scientific math including conversions;
  • Basic computer skills; ability to work independently from oral and written instructions; technical aptitude; ability to train and instruct others.
  • Ability to work well with faculty and students and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials and the ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials. Will require a valid vehicle operators license and evening, weekend and holiday working hours. In certain units, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
