Job Description:

OVERVIEW:


The Curator for Arts and Humanities at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is responsible for participating in the development, management, research, accessions, utilization, and presentation of the Museum’s cultural collections. The Curator works with the Lead Curator and the Collections department team curates and oversees the rotation, utilization, and care of artifacts incorporated into the Museum exhibitions, kiosks, programs and experiences. 


 


REPORTS TO: Lead Curator, Arts and Humanities


 


 


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


 


1. Works to maximize the use and visibility of the collection through provision of ideas, artifacts and information in various collaborative efforts and ventures. Works with staff members to provide objects and relevant documentation in a timely manner.


 


 


2. Assists with accessioning and deaccessioning. Completes processing of artifacts into the museum’s permanent collection, works with Collections Management staff to catalogue, store, retrieve, and record documentation into collections management computer database. Provides deaccessioning support through selection, documentation and appropriate disposition of objects.


 


 


3. Assists with identifying, researching, seeking and acquiring appropriate iconic artifacts and loans for the museum.


 


 


4. Works closely with Lead Curator, Collections Management and Conservation staff to assure and recommend collections care, safety, and documentation and to develop and implement plans for long-term solutions.


 


 


5. Serves as curator and provides content expertise for project/program planning teams to accurately and appropriately utilize artifacts via temporary, permanent and traveling exhibits, gallery programs, and virtual use of the collection. Works with internal colleagues to plan, prepare, install and de-install object-based exhibits.


 


 


6. Facilitates access to the collection and utilization of the collection to advance the mission, vision and strategic plan achievement for the museum.


 


 


7. Selects, nurtures, mentors and evaluates interns and volunteers working with Collections.


 


 


8. Presents collections materials through tours, programs, and public and professional presentations.


 


 


REQUIREMENTS:


 



  1. Bachelor’s degree in history, archaeology, anthropology, social studies education, art history, or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

  2. Two (2) years of experience curating museum artifact collections in a museum or cultural institution.

  3. Exceptional organizational skills.

  4. Experience in artifact handling, cataloging, and condition reporting.

  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience in public presentations.

  6. Ability to work effectively as a team member within a fast paced environment that values diversity and inclusion.

  7. Demonstrated research skills for the development of text for exhibits, catalogues, publications, and programs, as well as for documentation and the identification of potential acquisitions.

  8. Proficient computer skills, including word processing and database programs.

  9. Proven experience in working productively and creatively in an educationally oriented museum focused on children and families.

 


 


 


ADA REQUIREMENTS:


 



  1. Position requires viewing computer monitor, reviewing documents, examining artifacts, preparing exhibitions and conducting research.

  2. Position requires communication by telephone, one-on-one conversations and public presentations.

  3. Position requires keyboard use, exhibit installation and artifact manipulation.

  4. Position requires lifting artifacts and exhibit cases up to approximately 50 pounds, climbing and bending to reach artifacts and to install exhibits.
