Are you someone who enjoys working both out in the field and in the office?  Do you interect well with both internal and external stakeholders?  Are you organized and can meet deadlines?  If so, this may be the role for you!  A cross connection specialist will help ensure our customers are within compliance for their backflow devices, perform inspections as needed, track compliance, and be the point of contact for the cross connection program for our North/Central customers.  This position is a great position to introduce yourself to the water utility business!  This position will work Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm and you must have a valid driver's license.

Primary Role



The Cross-Connection Specialist is responsible for the administration of the state cross connection control program to ensure compliance with environmental regulations relating to cross connections and backflow prevention. The Specialist will provide direction to field operations, customers and other necessary functional groups.





Key Accountabilities




  • Serves as the first point of contact for customers, regulator, network staff and cross connection staff. (40%)

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support: compose correspondence, research accounts, answer customer phone calls and perform data entry. (30%) Assists the Sr. Specialist, Manager and/or Director in coordinating the local enforcement of the cross-connection control program to ensure compliance with regulations, company tariffs, and the American Water cross connection best operating procedure (BOP). (10%)

  • Prepares data requests and reports in the ORCOM cross connection control system. (10%)

  • Maintains records and files of backflow device test reports, surveys, and inspection reports. (10%)




Knowledge/Skills




  • Entering and tracking data in database, written and oral communication with various entities, proficient in Microsoft Excel, Share Point, etc. 

  • Good to excellent working knowledge of all Federal, State and local requirements for Cross Connection and Backflow Prevention regulations, guidance or statutes.




Experience/Education




  • High school diploma required; associates degree preferred.

  • One (1) to two (2) years education or working knowledge of regulations and program essentials.




Travel Requirements




  • Local and occasional overnight travel to districts may be required.

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.




Work Environment




  • Substantial time may be spent in the field visiting customers, answering questions on backflow device installation, and performing site inspections.




Certifications & Licenses




  • Certified Backflow Prevention Device Tester preferred.
