POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Editor, Journals is responsible for providing valuable support to the editorial team by building good working relationships with Editors in Chief, Editorial Board Members, partners and societies, managing day-to-day administration, and contributing to or leading projects as required.

 

Reporting to the Journals Executive Editor, the Assistant Editor must be able to analyze incoming communication, providing constructive feedback, and troubleshooting routine problems that may arise. They must be flexible, able to prioritize, organize and coordinate work assignments, and able to determine the most efficient way to accomplish each task. Other responsibilities include: maintaining team files, corresponding with authors/editors, preparing journal proposals and contracts, managing journal articles/issues for timely acceptance and publication, and updating pipeline plans accordingly. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:


  • Contribute to achieving annual targets for journal submission, publications, transfers, and target turnaround times.

  • Strive for maximal efficiency and productivity of editors, peer-reviewers and editorial board members, and help manage/streamline the peer-review process for assigned journals.

  • Handle non-strategic matters to maintain scholarly journals: prepare new agreements, update internal systems, request payments, and maintain other journal records.

  • Monitor peer-review tool to regularly provide updated pipeline for high-volume journals.

  • Support Editorial Director and Executive Editor during editorial trips and exhibits.

  • Prepare materials for team reports, conferences, and board meetings, including assistance with PowerPoint presentations.

  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues across all departments to coordinate ongoing production, marketing, special sales, conferences, and other internal department deadlines.

  • Support other team members with ad-hoc tasks and requests as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:


  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 6 months of office experience

  • 1-2 years' experience in either science publishing or journal publishing is preferred

  • Very strong computer skills required in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; database and other software to track projects across a portfolio of journals

  • Laser focused attention to detail; exhibiting strong organizational and analytical skills are a must

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Flexibility and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
