Position Profile

Jazz Pharmaceuticals' Information Technology (IT) department is seeking a Sr. Manager, IT R&D Data Engineer for the IT Product Development Capabilities team. In this hands-on role, this person will be responsible for ingesting diverse clinical data sources, developing data integrations and transformations, supporting data solutions in production, and overall R&D data operations. In partnership with various R&D and R&D-facing business functions and other IT functional areas, this role will be responsible for the development and support of R&D data & analytics solutions that will provide actionable and meaningful insights to accelerate the development of clinical trials. This individual must be capable of identifying automation opportunities, delivering detailed documentation of data and workflows, and coordinating with IT PDC data analytics team members to provide support to our R&D Clinical Development Operations, Clinical Development, BioMetrics, and other R&D functions engaged in our company clinical trials and overall medicinal product development. This position will also develop automated data processes, transform data to create user-friendly data structures for ad-hoc analyses, test the validity of results, and deliver appropriate documentation. This individual must be capable of interfacing with all levels of the organization to achieve success, including close partnership with the IT BI and Data Strategy team for best practices and knowledge sharing.

Essential Functions

    Partner with R&D Clinical Development Operations (GCDO), Clin Dev, BioMetrics, Pre-Clinical, Drug Safety & Pharmacovigilance, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs), and other functions to develop data engineering solutions supporting R&D Clinical Data initiatives, while ensuring alignment to Jazz's business strategy and overall IT data strategy.
  • Hands-on involvement in designing and development of automated processes to extract data from various internal and external clinical and RWE sources, and to combine and transform them into meaningful data elements to create different types of data structures to meet various business needs (transactional, star schema, snowflake schema, normalized, denormalized, staging, datamart, data warehouse, etc.).

  • Partner with Clinical Data Management, Statistical Programming, Jazz Clinical Data Factory (JazzCDF) business process owners and system owners to develop innovative clinical data structures and schemas in the R&D

analytics data warehouse to further strengthen our clinical data assets and enable diverse clinical research analytics capabilities.


  • Take ownership, develop, and manage the lifecycle of Jazz R&D ETL processes/workflows with tools like Informatica IICS (ETL) and Alteryx.

  • Provide daily data operations/engineering support for issues and enhancements requests, managing support queues, and delivering data constructs as needed.

  • Manage development projects of small to medium size in scope, and develop prototypes as well as production- ready reporting and data solutions.

  • Willingness to learn, adapt to new technologies, and ability to manage multiple development projects/activities with increasing complexities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • At least 5 years of business experience in the IT industry with pharmaceutical, biotech, bioinformatics, or healthcare related laboratory, research and diagnostic industries, a plus.

  • Must have at least 5 years of hands on experience with data engineering and business intelligence, extracting data from various sources, and transforming data to meet business needs; using these techniques on healthcare data sets is a plus (healthcare operations, clinical, product distribution, drug compliance, safety, etc.).

  • Must have strong critical thinking and data analytics skills and be able to understand complex healthcare business processes to develop agile and insightful data rich solutions.

  • Must have hands on experience with using SQL/PL-SQL language to design and create various types of data schemas for various needs (discovery, ad-hoc analyses, operational reporting, data warehouse/data marts).

  • Experience with AWS Redshift, Oracle, MS SQL Server, Vertica, or other databases required.

  • Must have hands on experience working with software tools and independently create automated processes to extract, transform and load data (ETL) into appropriate data schemas.

  • Strong working experience with Informatica ETL (IICS), Alteryx or other enterprise ETL platforms is required. Job will require using such tools on a day to day basis.

  • Some experience with data visualization tools (i.e. Tableau, Qlikview, Qlik Sense) and ability to independently create prototype views using data extracts is desired.

  • Must possess excellent communication (oral and written) and problem-solving skills

  • Must be self-motivated, detail oriented and able to multi-task

  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, demanding and dynamic work environment

Required/Preferred Education and Licenses

  • Bachelors degree. Bachelor degree in Computer Sciences or Computer Engineering is a plus.

  • Responsibilities may require a work schedule that may include working outside of "normal" work hours, in order to meet business demands.

  • Occasional public contact requiring appropriate business apparel.
