Buyer - Engineering and Supply at Alfa Laval Inc in Richmond, Virginia

Job Description:

OBJECTIVE (broad function, scope and purpose for the position)

This position is responsible for project purchases for Engineering and Supply to assure we have component availability to meet installation and commissioning schedules.   This person also develops the function to meet future needs of efficient processes with shorter lead time.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION (outline job duties and responsibilities):


  • Generate PO’s and perform all other system administrative activities from PO entry to receiving and invoicing

  • Daily monitoring and expediting of purchase orders as needed to meet project time lines

  • Coordinate closely with purchasing manager regarding supplier issues that affect project on-time and on-spec performance

  • Schedule and coordinate the planning/execution of subcontract jobs with external suppliers

  • Apply continuous improvement techniques/methods to internal processes and systems to increase efficiency, customer service and reduce costs

  • Proactively communicate and elevate potential delays to project managers to evaluate impact on schedule

  • Resolve PO/invoice discrepancies and claims with suppliers

  • Involvement in supplier development initiatives to improve lead times, pricing and measure supplier statistics

  • Assists Purchasing Manager with supplier audits and performance reviews along with monthly/quarterly reporting

  • Evaluates quotes for best quality, price and delivery as well as negotiate Alfa Laval terms and conditions with suppliers

  • Recommend processes/procedures to improve department KPIs

  • Creates and supports successful supplier relationships

  • Assist with logistics coordination for USA projects

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION DESIRED

  • Education (degree or years) and/or Certification/Registration:

Bachelor’s degree (preferably in business) or equivalent work experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes Desired in Candidate:


  • Min 5 years' experience in buying/planning in a manufacturing and/or project management environment

  • Demonstrated interest and capability in Procurement/Purchasing

  • Solid end to end supply chain understanding

  • Superior analytical and mathematical/numeracy skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Open minded and creative in solution development

  • Ability to work well within a team

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Knowledge of ERP system

  • Intermediate/Advance skill level in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Strong negotiating skills

  • Strong skills in:

    • Time management

    • Attention to details

    • Written & verbal communications
