Department Statement:
Colgate University, ranked among the nation’s top twenty liberal-arts colleges, is located in Hamilton, New York, in the Chenango River Valley. The Africana and Latin American Studies Program offers major concentrations in African, African American, Caribbean, or Latin American Studies. The Program sponsors cultural and educational events in these areas throughout the year, working with faculty affiliated with the Program and with African, African American, Caribbean, and Latino student groups on campus.


Accountabilities:
Accountable for coordinating programming initiatives, assisting in the administration of its academic activities, and facilitating communications with program constituents.

Responsibilities also include:
  • ensuring that students have access to opportunities for student group membership and leadership and that they receive value as a result of their participation in the community;
  • encouraging students to achieve a sense of responsibility for their personal growth and academic success;
  • effective outreach to students and proactively ensuring students engage in campus life area through personal interactions, and various media;
  • applying knowledge of campus life area to the development and execution of programs that align with and foster the development of students within program areas. Ensures effective and responsible execution of these programs;
  • developing and sharing knowledge about campus life area and University policies and procedures;
  • effective management of logistics for event and programs including accurate capture and maintenance of records and program data;
  • generating ideas for program execution;
  • assessing and making appropriate judgements in case of emergencies;
  • and as required, effectively supervising students.


    Professional Experience/Qualifications
    - Interest in and familiarity with African, African American, Latin American or Caribbean Studies.
    - Ability to work cooperatively and formulate coalitions in an intercultural and interdisciplinary setting.
    - Excellent research, writing, and administrative capabilities.
    - Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Publisher, Internet, and WWW tools.
    - Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Competence in Spanish, preferred.


    Education
    A Bachelor’s degree is required.

    Work Schedule:
    This 11-month position is slated to start on August 1 and runs during the academic year. This position is for one-year with the possibility of renewing for an additional year.
