Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc. is recruiting for a Part-time Fire Protection Engineer in Richland, WA.

This position will support Hanford Laboratory Management and Integration, LLC (HLMI). HLMI is located in Richland, WA, and operates, manages, and maintains the 222-S Laboratory Complex for the Department of Energy. The HLMI members are Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc. (Oak Ridge, TN), and Advanced Technologies and Laboratories International (Gaithersburg, MD).

The 222-S Laboratory's primary mission is to provide analytical support for the storage and treatment of tank waste at the Hanford Site. These services are performed at the 222-S Laboratory Complex, located in the 200 West Area of the Hanford Site.

We are looking for someone to work part-time on an as-needed basis.

The Fire Protection Engineer shall perform the duties of the company authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for all matters of Fire Protection within the facility.

Duties of a TOC Fire Protection Engineer include:

  • Provide fire protection engineer technical support to the organization and facilities to assist with implementation of the fire protection program, assist line management with fire investigations, assist in the resolution of fire system discrepancies, and support the preparation of exemptions/equivalency/deviation requests.
  • The Fire Protection Engineer shall be deputized by the Hanford Fire Marshal as described in the Hanford Fire Marshal's Charter.
  • The Fire Protection Engineer shall support the Hanford Fire Marshal as identified in HNF-58158, "Fire Protection Flow-Down of Roles, Responsibilities, Authorities, and Enforcement."
  • Where applicable, The Fire Protection Engineer shall apply HNF-36174, "DOE Fire Protection Handbook - Hanford Chapter."
  • Disseminate fire protection information to management to keep them advised of changes, special problem issues, and/or new requirements related to the fire protection program.
  • The Deputized Fire Protection Engineer shall operate in the roles of "Building Code Official (BCO)" and "Fire Code Official (FCO)" as described in DOE O 420.1C.
  • Establish and interpret fire protection policies, codes, standards and requirements, and maintain program procedures applicable to operations, activities, projects, and facilities.
  • Review fire protection designs, specifications, modifications, fire system acceptance test procedures, and fire equipment procurement to ensure compliance with DOE and statutory fire protection requirements, standards, and recommended practices.
  • Ensure a fire hazard analysis is conducted at all nuclear and new facilities by performing or coordinating preparation, reviewing, and approving all fire hazard analyses and assist in acquiring DOE approval, where required.
  • Review and approve, as appropriate, requests for exemptions, variances, deviations, or equivalency evaluations from fire protection standards and requirements; and ensure a Hanford Fire Marshal review is performed in accordance with the Fire Marshal Charter before being submitted to DOE.
  • Establish and maintain a list of those facilities that require fire protection facility assessments, and ensure new facilities are added to the list for review.
  • Perform fire protection facility assessments to determine compliance with applicable DOE Orders (DOE O 420.1C), and prescribed standards and ensure any deficiencies are maintained in the deficiency tracking system until corrected
  • Assist with fire protection operational readiness reviews to verify that the facility, staff, procedures, and technical safety bases for operation are in place and ready for the defined operation.
  • Ensure that the working copies of files and records of fire protection activities (e.g., internal procedures, corrective action files, interpretations, etc.) are maintained and are accessible.
  • Attend training courses to maintain proficiency in the mandatory fire protection standards of the program.
  • Prepare and submit the "Annual Fire Protection Summary" (one hard copy and one electronic copy) for the previous calendar year.
  • Provide fire protection overview of subcontractor activities and facilities.
  • Provide technical assistance to DOE.
  • Support with the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems.

Requirements

  • A degree in Fire Protection Engineering (desired) or BS in Engineering is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant and diverse experience is fire protection design engineering is required.
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility is desired.
  • Thorough understanding of and demonstrated previous application of NFPA Codes is required.
  • Must be able to support construction and operational activities related to design outputs.
  • Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and/or clearances requirements, US citizenship is required.
