Job Description:

The Department of General Surgery is looking for a full-time specialty nurse to work with the Surgery team in the outpatient clinic at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Primary Function:

The Specialty Nurse is responsible for an area of specialized nursing practice, and provides direct and indirect care to patients and their families in the inpatient, ambulatory, and outpatient settings. Utilizes the nursing process as a basis for providing and evaluating nursing care. Applies knowledge of growth and development, pathophysiology and family dynamics in delivery of care

  • Performs appropriate assessment of patient/family upon arrival /admission.
  • Performs ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress and revision of interdisciplinary plan of care related to patient needs.
  • Identifies patient/family need for further resources and initiates appropriate teaching and/or referrals.
  • Participates in responding to patient phone calls. Explains treatment regimens to patient/family after having discussed with the physician or APP.
  • Demonstrates ability to share clinical knowledge with other members of the health care team; works collaboratively with Nursing Education Department to share subspecialty knowledge with nursing staff.
  • Acts as a liaison between families and members of the health care team.
  • Utilizes specialized body of knowledge and technical skills in nursing practice related to subspecialty in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy and protocol.
  • Participates in the development of standards of care for the specialty patient population.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the care of all ages; neonates, pediatrics, and adolescents.
  • Recognizes and identifies own learning needs and responsibility for continual development; strives to increase knowledge and identifies goals for professional growth.
  • Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality/Process Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.
  • Assist with minor procedures in the general surgery clinic including: incision and drainage of abscess, suture and staple removal, cauterization of granulation tissue, removal of drains, gastrostomy tube care, wound and ostomy care.
  • Actively participated in weekly general surgery nursing didactic meetings.
  • Provide education to families related to common general surgery diagnoses and procedures.
  • Assist with ordering patient supplies from Durable Medical Equipment companies.
  • Participate in the care coordination of the bariatric program.

    • Requirements:

    • BSN
    • Three years of related pediatric clinical experience
    • Active Delaware (or compact state) Registered Nurse Licensure Required.
    • Application for Registered Nurse License in Pennsylvania and New Jersey within 30 days of hire.
