Position Summary:

Coordinates and directs the activities of the support services and personnel of the UT Pathology Outreach Laboratory.

Location: Texas Medical Center

Dept.: Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

Status: Full-Time

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Manages the daily accessioning operations, work scheduling, specimen processing, screening, and quality assurance reviews to include organization of tumor board review material and specimens.
2. Monitors and maintains policies, procedures, and standards related to reporting and accessioning of patient data.
3. Assist Director to ensure project controls, tracking and performance measurement, reporting and product delivery objectives are met.
4. Supervises accessioning and processing of specimens for cyto-pathology/pathology slides and efficient transfer of specimens to other laboratories for further processing if required.
5. Maintain connection between clients, patients, and the laboratory.
6. Ensure that all requirements for accreditation by governing agencies are met while ensuring that all university policies are followed.
7. Applies and trains staff on the correct ICD-9-CM and checks CPT-4 codes to patient charge encounters as defined by regulatory agencies.
8. Assists in development of departmental reporting systems.
9. Administers medical transcription of pathology cases
10. Controls confidential information and sensitive issues.
11. Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Proficient knowledge of: surgical biopsy, cytopathology processing, laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office.
Understanding of CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding procedures.
Familiarity with medical terminology, medical pathology transcription, HIPAA requirements and CLIA (CAP) requirements.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in a related field or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

Two (2) years in an accredited laboratory in the specific area of study. Previous experience supporting a laboratory's multiple areas within an independent anatomic pathology laboratory highly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
