Job Description



The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has established a bold goal to increase current fleet operational availability via reductions in reactor plant maintenance and enhanced shipyard scheduling and execution flexibility. In conjunction with various NNL technical organizations contributing to this goal, the Fleet Projects unit leads the effort currently focused on achieving this bold goal for the submarine fleet. Linkage of NNL innovation initiatives to fleet maintenance & servicing improvements also flows through the Fleet Projects unit.

The Fleet Operational Availability Improvement engineer will interface with shipyards, NNL technology and power plant engineering organizations, Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc, Reactor Plant Contractors Offices, and external non-nuclear Naval organizations to facilitate success toward the NNL goals related to fleet operational availability and maintenance & servicing innovation. The individual will work closely with NNL management and technical leads and external organizations, including Naval Reactors, to assess submarine (and potentially aircraft carrier) availability and maintenance plans. The individual will work with other members of the Fleet Projects unit to prioritize and drive NNL efforts which provide maximum benefit toward the operational availability goal, and exert similar influence and knowledge with other technical organizations, such as the reactor plant planning yards and Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc.







Required Skills




  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of twelve years of relevant experience; or

  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of ten years of relevant experience; or

  • Currently or previously a Shift Supervisor or SIT in the Nuclear Operations Program; or

  • CRE Qualification or SRE qualified with nine years of experience

  • Power plant engineering experience, systems design, or reactor operational experience (at reactor plant contractors office, prototypes, NAVY)

  • Shipyard/squadron availability/maintenance support or execution.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Demonstrated track record of accomplishment, problem solving, teamwork, personal ownership, and collaboration while being decisive and possessing courage to stand behind decisions.

  • Good communication and technical writing skills.
