Job Summary:

Under the clinical supervision of the designated site Clinical Supervisor, the Assessment Counselor is responsible for conducting same day and scheduled assessments for potential and current clients of Mirror’s outpatient and residential programs through telemedicine and in person. Some assessments may occur in person in community settings including jails. The Assessment Counselor shall operate in accordance with the policies and procedures determined by the Board of Directors and as implemented by his/her supervisor and all parties shall abide by all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Assessment Counselor will abide by the Kansas Department of Aging & Disability Services, Community Services & Programs Division standards (standards for licensure/certification of alcohol & other drug abuse treatment programs). The duties of this position include SUD assessments, intakes, and referrals, curricula development and implementation, psycho-educational presentations, individual counseling, group counseling, case management activities and all related documentation demands.

Qualifications:


  1. Graduate of a four-year accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social work, sociology, psychology, substance abuse counseling or a closely related field preferred. * A Master's Degree matching one of the aforementioned professions would be desirable.

  2. Be a licensed substance abuse counselor in the State of Kansas. Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC), Licensed Master Addiction Counselor (LMAC) or Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor (LCAC) required.

  3. Certification to deliver SB 123 services and assessments and DUI evaluations is required. KDOT certification is preferred.

  4. Excellent interpersonal skills required as well as ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  5. Capable of maintaining a team spirit. Ability to work cooperatively with others.

  6. Must be adaptable to change and have effective organizational skills.

  7. Must be able to organize and follow through on multiple tasks.

  8. Display consistent, good judgment and decision-making skills.

  9. Counseling staff must have a thorough working knowledge of the disease of addiction and the various modes of evidenced-based treatment. Must be able to adapt to and implement changing treatment models and techniques determined by client and programming needs.

  10. Knowledge of mental health and dual diagnosis.

  11. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with chemically dependent clients.

  12. Must be able to pass security check.

  13. Every employee must be free of chemical dependency for at least 2 years prior to employment.

  14. Must have proficient computer skills or experience and/or skills working with an Electronic Health Record.

  15. This position may also involve bending, walking stairs and lifting up to 40 pounds on occasion.


  1. Coordinate intakes to the assigned residential/outpatient programs. 


    • Track referrals and schedule intakes based on clinical need, bed availability and payer source, collaborating with residential program administrators. 


    • Assist with intakes and complete assessments including biopsychosocial assessments, clinical updates utilizing the ASAM criteria, and Senate Bill 123 assessments as needed. 



  2. Complete biopsychosocial assessment, Senate Bill 123, SASSI and other Substance Use related assessments. 


    • Assessors will complete at least 15 assessments each week.  


    • Complete Strengths Based Assessments, identify client’s strengths and barriers to success. 


    • Assist client with prioritizing goals, identifying objectives and community resources to partner with client in meeting completing objectives and achieving goals. 


    • Make prompt referrals for the appropriate level of care determined by the assessment. 


    • Collaborate with the client and others involved in the client’s treatment to assist in coordinating the referral process and appropriate level of treatment. 


    • Maintain ongoing communication with treatment providers.   


    • Establish relationships with community liaisons, treatment facilities, mental health professionals, criminal justice professionals, governmental agencies, and other professionals to maintain a continuum of care. 


    • Demonstrate knowledge and adhere to all HIPPA and 42 CFR Part 2 legal, ethical, and confidentiality laws and processes.  


    • Prepare all documentation necessary to ensure quality care, in a timely manner.  Must comply with KDADS licensing standards. 



  3. Assist immediate supervisors with coverage related issues e.g. vacations, trainings, sick, etc.  The assessment counselor will assist in coverage for both residential and outpatient facilities.  The supervisor may request the assessment counselor to perform other essential functions of the program.  


  4. Provide group/individual counseling for clients in both residential and outpatient treatment settings. 


  5. Maintain all treatment related paperwork such as assessments, treatment plans, group and individual notes, and discharge summaries within Mirror’s electronic client record. 


  6. Must attend and participate in all staff meetings. 


  7. Participate in the on-call rotation for clinical coverage required at residential facilities. 


  8. Provide psychoeducational groups and learning experiences geared to meet the client's level of understanding. 


  9. Assist in the collection of client fees. 


  10. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by their supervisors.
