We Are:

Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

The Accelerator Division is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a Post-doctoral position in the Muon Department. The mission of the Muon Department is to develop, improve and operate the Muon Campus accelerator complex in support of Fermilab's muon and external beamline programs. This program currently involves experimental beamlines in Fermilab test beam areas. The successful candidate will work on a new ultra-low energy secondary muon production beamline to be installed in the MTA (MeV Test Area) during the accelerator shutdown in July - Oct of 2021. This work will include assisting with installation, commissioning, and transport of the 10-50 MeV muon produced for the Muon Catalyzed Fusion Experiment being supported in this area. Modeling, simulation and optimization of the cold muon beam will be a part of the program and required skills. The position is for a period of up to 16 months, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter.

We Are Looking For

• PhD in Physics


• Basic knowledge of accelerators and beam dynamics (ideally attended an accelerator physics school)


• Demonstrated experimental skills and experience with very low-energy particle production or ion beams


• Beam modeling and simulation of low energy secondary production beams and analysis


• Ability to solve optimization problems associated with the complex production channels and meet operational deadlines.


• Ability to work effectively under the requirements of schedules and shifting priorities


• Ability to work effectively with other individuals


• Contributes effectively within a diverse workforce and upholds Fermilab's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Desirable experience/skills include:

• Expertise with beamline transport design and simulation codes: TRANSPORT (or TRANSOPTER) and corresponding translation into MADX with the ability to generate survey and alignment data


• Experience in the operation of a low-energy accelerator facility


• Modeling and simulation expertise for generating, defining and propagating a secondary beam phase space


• Some experience with particle beam instrumentation, primarily beam profile monitors


• Ability to develop customized software tools to gather and analyze data
