POSITION PURPOSE:


The Contamination Worker will provide ancillary production support for Shielded Cell Cleanout within the Materials Evaluation Laboratory (MEL) at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory (Bettis in West Mifflin, PA, Prime Contractor Site to the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of the Navy).


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Perform D&D work activities that include the removal of radioactive materials and components to support MEL project activities.

  • Perform operations within radiological containments including glove bags to support equipment/material removal.

  • Upgrades to MEL infrastructure where radiological controls may be required.

  • Characterize, minimize, segregate, and package waste for disposal focusing on what is contained in the MEL shielded cells.

  • Lifting and handling operations of equipment or structures as necessary to support MEL work.

  • Utilize contamination controls, work practices and personal protective equipment to remove contaminated materials.

  • Maintain required materials and equipment.


QUALIFICATIONS:



  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Industrial, demolition, environmental,

  • Radiological or related experience is preferred. Performs D&D operations required to remove radioactivity in strict compliance with radiological work procedures. Specific functions include set up and operation of radiological work areas, set up and operation in radiological containment, handling and packaging of radioactive material, and manual D&D operations. Approximately six months of site-specific training at the Buyer facility will be required to be fully qualified to perform work.

  • Must be able to obtain an "L" Security Clearance. Holding an existing clearance is preferred.


Other specialty qualifications include being able to or already possessing the following:



  • Specialize as Master-Slave Manipulator (MSM) operators to perform the necessary functions of shielded cell work

  • Perform work as drape/catch worker, glove bag/glovebox worker, and Walk-in Controlled Surface Contamination Area Worker

  • Additional qualifications as necessary, waste packaging and generation, hazardous waste generator/transporter, material handling operators, etc.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:


Minimum: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)


Computer Skills: Basic IT Knowledge - Must possess significant functional computer skills including use of mainstream business software including, but not limited to: Microsoft Office - Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Adobe Professional, Internet navigation.

The following are the physical requirements of the jobs. Must be able to: walk, stand, bend/twist at waist, kneeling/crawling, sitting, reaching, pulling/pushing, overhead work, grasping/gripping, lift up to 50 pounds, use stairs, climb ladders/scaffolding, work at heights, ability to hear normal speech and audible alarms, near and distant vision acuity, inclined or vertical ladders, ability to work in hot and cold conditions, medically qualified and ability to wear respiratory protection (PAPR, Full Face, Half Face), wear other PPE (i.e. foot protection, hand protection and hearing protection), possibly required to medically qualify as a lead (Pb) worker (Medical Surveillance) or crane operator (i.e. DOT physical).


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be onsite at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory and must adhere to all site rules and regulations.
