Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking highly motivated and self-driven nuclear engineers and reactor core designers with experience in reactor neutronics. Our Future Reactor Concepts unit is currently focused on: (1) working with Naval Reactors and the Navy to define the reactor design space and technology required for a next generation attack submarine, (2) providing the reactor design aspects needed to support core materials, core manufacturing, and nuclear core analysis code development, and (3) evaluating reactor core technology costs versus performance capability trade-offs. As such, this job position greatly impacts and drives reactor core technology development as well as computational nuclear analysis methods advancement. The next generation attack submarine project is currently in the pre-conceptual design phase, and the job position includes opportunities to contribute to design studies in concert with other reactor core design disciplines. For these reasons, effective communication skills are essential. This early phase will be followed by the official design phase involving a more formal design effort. Interested applicants must have experience with reactor core neutronics but must also demonstrate a passion to develop a broad-based understanding of how multiple disciplines impact reactor core design, and therefore must learn, understand, and act on reactor design considerations that extend beyond the nuclear area.

The Future Reactor Concepts unit has members at both the New York and Pennsylvania locations. Applicants must excel at working in a highly collaborative digital environment and be willing to actively improve efficiency in this organization.

  • Nuclear engineering degree(s)

  • Reactor core design experience

  • Experience in steering collective design efforts
