Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Greet patients as they present for surgery.

2. Ensure all registration material is correct (name, spelling, DOB, physician, date) and matches green card and ID bracelet. Notify patient registration regarding any errors.

3. Maintain efficient patient flow between waiting area and holding room. Resolve patient issues under supervision of Pre-Op RN.

4. Assist patient into dressing rooms, assists patient with changing clothes if needed. Complete belonging list, assign locker to patient. Place valuables in valuable envelope and deliver to admitting department.

5. Monitor and document on OR checklist vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration rate, room air O2 saturation. Obtain height and weight and other pertinent data as requested by RN. Report any abnormal result(s) to RN.

6. Verify NPO status, medications taken, allergies and document findings on checklist. Report NPO violations to Pre-Op RN/Anesthesia staff.

7. Review each patient chart for pre-op lab results, EKG's, X-ray's and obtain computer generated results as needed.

8. Assemble pre-op patient record when required for urgent and emergency add on patients and obtain medical records from computer generated medical record system.

9. Answer telephone, direct call to appropriate RN/dept, take messages and respond to routine questions. Perform other various functions at request of pre-op RN.

10. Transcribes Health Care Proxy information into computer system.

11. Order medical and clerical supplies for pre-op area. Stock and prepare dressing rooms as necessary.

12. Function as liason between patient and patient families and OR and PACU areas.

13. Participate in appropriate educational programs (BLS) and attend annual Safety Fair.





KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. High school graduate or equivalent.

2. Previous clerical experience (preferably in a healthcare setting). Medical terminology preferred.

3. An ability to set appropriate priorities and organize work flow.

4. An ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail during frequent interruptions.

5. Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interface with support and professional staff and patients.

6. An ability to work as a team member with flexibility and frequent change.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Busy patient-care environment.

2. Some exposure to patients with infectious disease.

3. Ability to walk and/or stand for up to 75% of work time. Essential functions require the ability to perform repetitive hand movements and make fine discriminations in sound. Complies with precautions, as defined by Infection Control staff, in patients/materials requiring isolation. Mount Auburn Hospital employees must be able to readily adjust to change and handle a rapid-paced environment and the stresses associated with that, while continuing to provide high-quality, efficient service.
