Fleet Mechanic - Vehicle and Equipment Technician IV 


Please note: after training is completed this position will work second shift - 2:30pm to 10:30pm

The Fleet Mechanic - Vehicle Equipment Technician position is represented by the AFSCME union and includes: Level III, IV, and V.



  • Entry level starting pay at Level IV is $26.60/hour or $55,328.00 annually per the negotiated current AFSCME Union Contract.  Over the span of your career with the City of Ann Arbor, employees in this position will have the potential to make up to $34.92/hour or $72,633.60 annually  per the negotiated current Union contract.

  • The city has a progression process that allows an employee to promote to higher job duty levels and higher pay after the union 6-month probation, by demonstrating additional technical competencies, knowledge and skills for each level during your career with the City while learning at your own pace.

  • In addition to increasing your hourly pay through the progression process, you will receive an annual Increase in pay as negotiated by the AFSCME Union Contract.

Duties

Incumbent may be responsible for the following duties, listed in order of frequency and importance:

Essential Duties



  • Repairing and maintaining City vehicles




  • Fabricating vehicle components and features for City use




  • Diagnosing problems with City vehicles



Related Work



  • Preparing and completing necessary paperwork on all completed repair orders




  • Performing other related duties as assigned




Knowledge of (position requirements at entry)



  • Small engine automotive repair practices




  • Large engine automotive repair practices




  • Computer software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office and MainSaver)




  • Electronic diagnostic equipment




  • Basic mechanical principles

Equipment

Miscellaneous hand tools (which must be provided by the employee) and equipment, miscellaneous office equipment, welding tools, hoists, computer and diagnostic tools.

Training and Experience



  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Equivalent




  • Determined by the Vehicle and Equipment Technician Job Progression Outline




Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry)



  • Valid Driver’s License; CDL – B (airbrake endorsement) upon hire or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.




  • Master Mechanic Certification for either Automobile/Light Truck Repair or Heavy-Duty Truck Repair.




  • Forklift permit through Safety within 90 days of hire.



Specialty Certification in one of the following:


  • Hydraulics: community College course, Sweeper School or specialty class

  • Water Systems: Sweeper School or Vactor School

  • Small Engine/Light Equipment: Manufacturers Certificate

  • Heavy Equipment: Manufacturers Certificate

  • Fire Apparatus: Manufacturers Certificate

  • Alternative Fuels: Manufacturers Certificate

Physical Requirements

Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions (i.e., confined spaces, heights, mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.), poor atmospheric conditions (i.e., fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation), inadequate lighting, and intense noise.

The work often involves the ability to perform routine moderate lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. including miscellaneous parts, brake parts, miscellaneous tools, tire/wheel assemblies, cases of oil and occasional heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. including miscellaneous parts, tire/wheel assemblies, misc. tools, hydraulic cylinders, tailgate spreaders, sweeper main brooms, brake parts and plow blades.
