JOB SUMMARY

Reports to the Executive Director, Cardiology Services. The Exercise Physiologist is responsible for implementing the fitness elements of the Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease, also referred to as Intensive Cardiac Rehab. Monitors participant response to the Fitness element of the intervention and communicates clinical issues to the Registered Nurse and Medical Director. Participates in the development of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Plan to ensure the quality and clinical effectiveness of the Program and the safety of each participant. In addition, will implement fitness program of traditional cardio-pulmonary rehab within established operational policies and procedures. Assists with coordination of day-to-day operations by ensuring sufficient staff coverage for fitness area, special programs, events and classes.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of the following: Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology or Physical Therapy required, two years of Cardiac rehabilitation experience preferred, Clinical certification within 90 days or employment (if not currently certified) in American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP), or AACVPR Certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Professional (CCRP), Experience or knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, Current certification in BCLS (CPR) required, Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred. Will need to obtain within 1 year of employment if not currently ACLS certified.

Knowledge & Skills

1. Technical knowledge of exercise programming, selection and progression to achieve maximum results.

2. Working knowledge of exercise equipment, set up, and maintenance.

3. Working knowledge of EKG rhythms and the identification of normal and abnormal responses.

4. Technical expertise to demonstrate a variety of correct exercise forms and techniques in accordance with nationally-approved standards.

5. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with a diverse group of clients, members and visitors in a professional, courteous, friendly and sincere manner.

6. Good computer skills.

7. Excellent public speaking skills.

8. Knowledge of adult education and coaching principles. Desire and willingness to collaborate as a member of a high-functioning interdisciplinary team that supports personal transformation.

Working Conditions

1. Works in an athletic club environment with frequent interruptions, the potential of increased noise levels and some discomfort due to cool or warm temperatures.

2. Requires the ability to work flexible hours.

3. Requires stamina to work effectively under adverse condition (i.e., determine need for and administer CPR).

4. Work may require occasional trips outside the hospital to administer services to the community.

Physical Demands

1. Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential duties of the position.

2. Finger and hand dexterity to manipulate instruments and equipment.

3. Good eyesight and hearing to detect changes in participant condition.

4. Work requires intermittent standing and walking to administer treatments.

5. May require lifting and transferring patients in the event of a code situation.
