POSITION SCOPE:



The project engineer works within the Engineering Department and is assigned to one of the three major operating departments (Paper Machines, Pulp Mill, Utilities). Works with operations, maintenance and process control to develop and prioritize the department capital project list. Manages all aspects of projects, including schedule, budget and effectiveness, from original scope definition through specification, design, installation and start-up.




POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:











  • Promote a safe working environment in all interactions with mill personnel and contractors. Manage projects to insure that implementation is achieved safely. Insure that projects take safety into account in their design for both operations and maintenance activities. Make regular safety contacts to encourage contractors and mill personnel to engage in safe behaviors. Projects shall also be managed and installed in accordance with all relevant state and federal environmental regulations.

  • Work with operating, maintenance and process control groups to develop a list of potential capital projects to be included in the mill strategic capital plan. Assist operations in defining the scope of each project and performing preliminary economic evaluations as required for cost reduction, production increase or quality improvement projects.

  • Utilize the operating department capital plan to develop detailed project definitions and scopes which will be used in the writing of Capital Allocation Requests.

  • Estimate the project costs and forecast quarterly outlays of funds for the successful completion of each project.

  • Work with vendors to size, specify and obtain quotes for any and all equipment that may be required to fulfill the requirements of the project. Evaluate vendor equipment proposals from both economic and technical standpoints.

  • Work with and manage contractors and engineering consultants, as needed, to complete the design, installation, mill integration and start-up of each project.

  • Conduct regular project updates and review meetings with both operations and maintenance personnel. Attend weekly engineering update meetings with the other department engineers to discuss project status.

  • Manage the budget of each project by writing requisitions for material and labor relevant to completion within the project scope. Any major revisions to the scope of a project will require the completion and approval of an amended Capital Allocation Request.

  • Maintain the project schedule by monitoring project progress, coordinating activities and removing roadblocks.

  • Maintain project data including manuals, drawings, specifications, scope documents, calculations, reports, etc. and publish to the engineering archive.

  • Provide project documentation to operations for their use in developing training packages for operators.








Required Skills



  • Background in project management in a paper mill environment, paper machine experience preferred. Minimum of five years of relevant capital project management experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, Mechanical or Chemical preferred.

  • Strong design and system troubleshooting skills required.

  • Working knowledge of SAP system preferred.

  • Good verbal/written communication skills.

  • Multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines on a continuous basis.

  • Leadership skills and ability to lead in a fast-paced environment.
