Job Description:

Position Summary:

Daikin is seeking a highly qualified general litigation and employment law attorney with strong knowledge of the law and the ability to deal tactfully with matters across a variety of subject matter areas. This attorney will provide support (50/50) on general litigation and claims matters (commercial and product-related claims) half of the time and employment and labor law matters, including employment-related claims and litigation, the remaining half.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience working on claims, disputes and employment matters and enjoy operating in a fast-paced, matrixed business environment. Additional experience in compliance and data privacy is a plus, as is experience with manufacturing and/or construction. The successful candidate will be a tactful, practical, well-organized, highly-motivated self-starter, with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

* Supports senior legal department colleagues with pending litigation and administrative agency matters, including, but not limited to, commercial (including product distribution), toxic tort, product liability, and environmental. Issues and supervises legal holds through on-line system.

* Collaborates with claims adjusters, risk management, insurers, and internal business and functional teams on litigation matters and litigation prevention.

* Counsels and collaborates with business and functional colleagues to investigate and handle claims and resolve potential disputes.

* Manages and responds to third party subpoenas.

  • Interprets and refines policies and guidelines, drafts offer letters, termination letters, and other documentation, and provides legal support on human resource matters, with assistance from expert outside employment counsel. Provides support to human resources in responding to employment claims, including EEOC and/or applicable state departments of human rights.
  • Develops and provides training on various legal, employment and compliance topics to company personnel.
  • Offers clear and effective counsel on a variety of legal issues, including advising on non-solicitation, non-compete and other employment related matters, including potential legal liabilities and risk mitigation.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with Daikin Legal Department colleagues and alongside other departments within the company
  • Anticipates, researches and communicates regarding legal issues that could impact the company.

* Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Education/Experience:

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and admission to the bar of the State of Minnesota. At least 5 years' experience handling general litigation and employment matters is required. The ideal candidate will have a combination of law firm and in-house experience. Additional experience in compliance and data privacy is a plus, as is experience with manufacturing and/or construction.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and Adobe Professional. Experience in using Thomson Reuters Legal Tracker law firm invoicing and approval and matter management system and Microsoft Teams is a plus. Other important skills include:

* Strong negotiation skills with both legal and employment issues

* Strong drafting skills and attention to detail

* Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and develop and maintain positive relationships with others at all levels inside and outside the company

Active admission to the bar in the State of Minnesota.
