Job Description:

The Ultra Engineering function manages a portfolio of specialist capabilities, generating highly differentiated solutions and products by applying electronic, mechanical, and software technologies in demanding and critical environments to meet customer needs.

Ultra Electronics Signature Management and Power (SMaP) is searching for a highly motivated and detail oriented Intern to support the development of SMaP systems. Working closely with program leads and system engineering, the Intern will support the development and integration of the system through design, development, integration, and testing phases. The intern will have the opportunity to support the development and selection of key technologies for the Navy and will have the opportunity to work with complex algorithms and cutting-edge SMaP hardware.

Responsibilities Include:


  • Software application and hardware integration testing


  • Execute formalized test procedures for application software


  • Software quality assurance, software and hardware defect tracking using Jira


  • Configure and troubleshoot component networking on private TCP/IP LAN


  • Configure and operate industrial hardware components (power supplies, single board computers, magnetometers, thermal sensors)


  • Configure and operate data acquisition lab equipment using National Instruments DAQmx and LabView


Required Skills:


  • Must be at least a rising Sophomore, enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program, ideally with a GPA of 3.0 or better.


  • Prior internship experience within software engineering (with a defense contractor preferred)


  • Able to work Part-time hours, Monday through Friday daytime.


  • This position requires either a US Person or a non-US Person who is eligible to obtain any required Export Authorization.


Desired Skills:

  • Strongly preferred being enrolled in one of the following majors: Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, or related STEM discipline.


  • Familiar with software development tools and coding experience a strong plus


  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows 10 operating system and tools


  • Working knowledge of Linux based operating systems and tools


  • Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio or similar Integrated Development Environment (IDE)


  • Use/familiarity of procedural or object-oriented programming languages C/C++, Java, or Python Knowledge of Microsoft .Net C# for desktop application development


  • Embedded, Multithreaded, Real Time software testing and/or development a plus


  • Experience creating/testing application Graphical User Interfaces (GUI)


  • Familiarity with Client/Server distributed software architecture


  • Use of third-party tools to analyze code coverage, memory leak, and other software integrity checks


  • Strong attention to detail and work ethic


  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to think independently and create new solutions to problems or challenges.


  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate professionally, including listening skills and the ability to voice opinions positively, as well as an acceptable level of technical writing skills.


  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently, with minimum hands-on help from the Manager of Engineering Services, including the ability to troubleshoot problems and make decisions independently and effectively.


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
