Position Overview

CRH Americas, Inc. is seeking an experienced attorney to join its collaborative legal department. In this hands-on role, you will report to the General Counsel of CRH Americas, Inc. and work closely with the Environmental Health & Safety (“EHS”) managers to address environmental issues. This role requires significant knowledge of the regulatory laws applicable to all three environmental media (air, water, soil) and compliance approaches with those laws. The position also requires significant negotiating experience with environmental regulators and a desire to develop sustainability initiatives.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.


  • Partner with EHS managers to respond to compliance matters and drive EHS programs.

  • Collaborate with the Company’s operating companies to obtain best-in-class environmental performance.

  • Help manage environmental consultants and outside counsel, if necessary.

  • Evaluate the Company’s environmental practices and sustainability initiatives on an ongoing basis.

  • Analyze regulations and legal precedent in order to make legal recommendations.

  • Serve as Company’s legal counsel in negotiations with Federal, State, and Local regulators.

  • Research, review, interpret, and draft legal documents such as consent decrees.

  • Supervise environmental litigation, including Superfund and insurance claims.

  • Review budgets and invoices from consultants and outside counsel.

  • Assist in the preparation of documents needed for accurate financial reporting.

  • Work collaboratively with all levels of internal and external clients.

  • Provide legal training to ensure that the operating companies comply with all applicable regulations.

  • Assist in litigation matters and represent Company’s businesses in enforcement or regulatory matters.

  • Identify legal exposures and take steps to ensure processes are in place to mitigate those exposures.

  • Counsel managers and other employees with regard to environmental matters.

  • Provide legal support for acquisitions and divestitures.

  • Create and provide training programs with regard to environmental law and sustainability.

  • Review, modify, and negotiate contracts related to environmental matters.

  • Select, develop, evaluate, motivate, retain, discipline, and train a staff, if needed.

  • Maintain professional demeanor at all times.

  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience


  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.

  • License to practice law in at least one state.

  • At least eight years of practicing environmental law as part of an in-house team or law firm.

  • Knowledge of best-in-class practices with respect to environmental regulations and sustainability initiatives.

  • Working knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing the environment.

  • Working knowledge of Westlaw and other legal research databases.

Work Requirements


  • Must have expert proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

  • Willingness to work independently within in a team environment and assist the team with other duties.

  • Must be willing to travel up to 30%.

  • The ability to lead and manage a team and develop their talents.

  • Experience of managing relationships with external advisers and controlling costs.
